Does anyone have a BMW X5 3.0sd 35d 40d that is out of motor plan or with high milage e.g 150 000km ?

I've seen a few 40d going for good priceses but, they all out of motor plan I am worried about the service cost on the twin turbo diesel

Also my wife has an 2006 X3 2.0d and maintenance was hectic between 130-190000km. Services is always +- R3000

Well if you're servicing your car at the dealer it's going to be expensive. But not unbearable. Air suspension can be expensive too. Turbos probably aren't as bad as you think unless you buy them from the dealer.

Please don't comment on tyre prices, my tyres on my Fortuner cost R14 000

When we did the clutch on the X3 car service city was more expencive than bmw, so we took it to bmw

King of diesel :praise:

My they have depreciated quite substantially, still think these 6cyl TTs are the best.

4 tyres on my little tractor costs 18k, so I cannot imagine what these 285s cost per piece :skit:

Lol if you want to compare fortuner tyres to x5 tyres. You're going to be in for a shock. Especially if you're getting rfts.

Car service city ripped you a new one them. LUK clutches are half the price of a dealer. And a good bmw specialist labour rate is generally half that of the agents.

I paid R22k for 4 new Continental RFT's for my X5 4.8i on 19" wheels the other day. I imagine that 20" tyres will be even more pricey.

I had to replace both rear air suspension bellows at R4k each at around 170000km.

I would also recommend that you get the gearbox oil & filter replaced at ZF Services, cost was about R6k when I did mine.

So these gearboxes give problems ?

We replaced the X3's transfer case at 185000km but, the warranty paid for everything

It depends on the way the vehicle has been driven  But as advised, get the oil changed, 6k now will save you 40k later

No, the gearboxes don't give problems. BMW's policy of not changing the gearbox oil & filter is the real problem, as the clutch packs in the box will eventually glaze if the oil is not replaced. The gearbox will then start slipping and eventually require a rebuild costing R50k upwards.

You can avoid all that by getting ZF (who built the gearbox and should know better than BMW) to replace the gearbox oil and filter as recommended by them when the box has done 80000-120000km.

The X3 transfer case is a known weakness.

The X5 transfer case is a bigger, stronger unit and is quite separate from the gearbox.

Air suspension on the rear is standard on all 4.8i models, I think it was optional on diesels but am not sure. Best is to look for the bellows on the car that you want to buy, they are easy to see.

Changing out the bellows is a DYI job on the E70 models. They don't fail catastrophically, mine developed a slow leak that I only noticed if the car has been standing for a few days.

Seeing that we are on the Suspension topic does anyone know if there is a company in SA that offers a suspension Lift kit for the X5 ?

I have emailed Man Harte Racing about it I know they did a 50mm Lift on their MHX6 but, I think they are going to be very expensive

IMO biggest risk item would be suspension related.

While you're investigating, check if there are options to replace the air suspension with standard suspension/parts if it does give up - heard of it being done on other brands (Merc specifically) that have problematic air suspensions.

Non rft's about R10k, i am running Azura pace better km's and no problem with road holding, just done my first service out of plan at bmw for R1498 at 114700km.
Draw the comments and history at the dealers and decide then, the history will tell the story
Excellent cars, a pitty all people not driving X5's got all the comments and issues
