Hi Gents,

I am new to the forum, literally just registered and posting for the first time.

So here goes my story, The lady and i are expecting our first little one soon. I've sold my old car (2door) and been looking at the x3 for about 2 months now.

I can't really find one in good condition with reasonable km's on it.

Do you think it is worth R105 000 x3 2.0d with 170k+ kms?

Also, if possible a list of common faults.

I really would like to get a Beemer and i'm almost at a loss and ready to give up finding one.

Please HELP!!:ty:

I recently bought a 2005 X3 2l diesel manual and am very happy with it. Had some issues when i got it (got it for a bargain price due to issues). Was jerking when i got it but immediately removed the swirl flaps, cleaned the air flow meter and the boost pipe sensor and car was back to normal again. Transfer case problems because of uneven tyre wear/wrong/not matching size tyres on the car is common. On mine i also removed the cat and disconnected the egr vacuum pipe. Car is really a pleasure to drive now. Yesterday when i filled up it did 13,6km/l (7,3l/100kms) which is a combo of town and open road. My son also bought a 2005 2l diesel X3 earlier this year for R105k but his only had on 102k kms. Mine is on 165k. We Unichipped his and he is very happy with his car as well. I can recommend the X3 and X5 E53, but do some preventative maintenance (as i did on my car and my son's)

Btw, a friend has a 2007 (not sure if 2007 or 2008) X3 3l diesel auto with all the bells and whistles with i think 160k kms on which he wants to sell. Car is in Somerset West or Upington (he lives in S West but has an office in Uptn as well) If you are interested i can call and get the latest price.
Where are you located?

OK, phoned my friend. His is a 2007 with 165k on the odo and his price is R150k I assume he will negotiate somewhat. Silver with black leather. Two new tyres and two very good. Sunroof, tow bar, executive spec. Will post some pictures which he will send me tomorrow. He is in Uptn with the car at the moment.
Where are you located?

There is always my 2005 X5 3l diesel auto with 190k kms on the odo, also good spec like sunroof, tow bar, sat/nav, very good tyres all round, cat removed, swirl flaps removed, egr disconnected, rear suspension done, gearbox serviced by ZF recently, in very good condition for R120k

Howsit man,

Thanks for the post, i'm going to have a look at 2 today. I'm based in JHB.

a few people have also told me not to go with a diesel motor because of the injectors and turbo?

So cpt is out of the question for me its a long way out to look at a car.

BMW diesel engines are rock solid if looked after. The car will fall apart around that engine. But the engine will keep going. The people that told you that don't know what they're talking about. I'm on my second diesel 5 series now. The current one is going to clock 200k km by the end of the year and shes absolutely perfect

:skit: Is there a difference in the injectors and turbos on petrol cars ? those people need a P.K

Diesel injectors back in the day would go bad because of the high levels of sulphur in our low quality diesel we got in SA. Now that we have 50ppm and 10ppm fuels injectors don't fail anymore and will last a long time if you change out the fuel filter fairly regularly. As for turbos going bad, thats from not changing your oil regularly enough. Change the oil every 10 000km the the turbo should last as long as the car.

I replaced my wife's 2004 X3 3.0i in December last year with a 2008 X3 3.0d and have been converted to the dark side, that motor is brilliant and the two x3's are worlds apart in fuel consumption and acceleration, so much that I don't understand why BMW continue to make SUV's with petrol engines when the diesel motors are far better suited to lugging a 1800-2200kg SUV around. Diesel FTW!

Low quality diesel, not replacing fuel filter on time, reving a cold engine and switching it off straight after hard driving will do that.

Thanks for all the input, i suppose it boils down to the same point on all used cars.

Proper maintenance is the key. I'll keep up my hunt for another month.

Appreciate the bit of hope you are giving me!!

Also, first stop is replacing/removing the turbo oil seperator as that is one part BMW neglected to replace and the older loo roll type filter became clogged and rock hard and oil could not filter through which resulted in many a turbo failure. And remember the swirl flap delete, as that is a ticking time bomb.

Don't limit yourself to the 2.0d, test out the 3.0d too and you won't look at another 2.0d again. 3.0d is so much better on the highway, overtaking is effortless and you still get awesome economy.

Good day guys,

I need help. I own a 2 litre diesel X3, with M47 engine. Rubber hoses on turbo inlet (from intercooler to inlet manifold) has cracked, and so also the inlet (from turbo into intercooler). Dealers want R13K for the two sets of pipes. Anyone knows of an aftermarket replacement? I'm in Cape Town. Thanks
