Hi!

I currently have a 2006 E90 320i. I am looking at trading it in for a X3, YM 2005 - 2006. I currently get 11.3 to a liter. Any idea what the X3 is like on fuel? Im looking at a 2.5 or 3.0.

Any advise?

Thanks!

Firstly, welcome to the forum, always good to see a new lady Fanatic.:rollsmile: as to your question, go for the 3.0l diesel, it's a bullet proof engine, lots of GO in the X3 body, and well worth the fuel penalty. Responds well to software upgrades without issues too. Enjoy! :thumbs:

Welcome. :thumbs:

I agree wholeheartedly with pfw28. :thumbs::thumbs:

The X3 petrol versions are heavy on fuel if you city commute often.

Our X3 3.0i gets around 14l/100km (or around 7km/l) in general city commuting. It drops to 10l/100km in open road cruising.

Make sure you get the transfer case inspected before you buy a higher-mileage model. There is evidence of transfer case wear and failure on the X3 after 120000km or so, which can cost R20-30k to fix or replace.

Otherwise it is a great family car, very reliable and fun to drive.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the awesome advise and the warm welcoming... Really appreciate it.

Do you know of any reliable car dealers in Cape Town that can help me find one? I checked a few Dealerships and most of them are definitely not legit.

Awesome night to you! :ty::ty::ty:

our 2007 X3 3.0d averaged 10l per 100km
Mostly town driving.
Highway driving 8l per 100 km.

Sports pack made the ride a bit uncomfortable though FYI

Diesel requires a mindshift for some...but is the perfect choice if its going to be your daily drive and plenty city driving :thumbs:

Try to testdrive both petrol and diesel models before you decide.

I think the 2.0d is underpowered for the heavy X3, but either of the 3.0d or 3.0i is fine although they have very different driving characteristics. You should find out your preference before deciding.

Please post pics of your new ride when you have made the upgrade.

Another note: you will find with most used X3's of that vintage that some plastic interior bits like the window switch panels and multi-funtion steering wheel panel will look scuffed, as if the finish is peeling.

Don't let that put you off, as these items can be easily and cheaply restored with a can of Plasti-dip. Search for this topic in the forums and let the man in your life do some work on your car.

Hi

I had an X3 3.0i. Great car, but quite heavy on fuel in normal town driving, 13-14l/100km, but actually not bad on highway driving, 9-10l/100km. I enjoyed the car, rooimier inside than I expected.

2.0d more than strong enough for the car with great consumption, but I'll stay away from that one due to turbo failure history (unless you can get one with a fair amount of m/plan left on it).

The 2.5l is waaaay under powered for the X3 and is in fact heavier on fuel than the 3.0i. The 3.0i has 170kw which is more than enough. The later facelift models has the 200kw engine (Xdrive models).

Go have a look at Auto Executive in Voortrekker Road, Belville, they had 2 X3 3.0i's on the floor a few weeks ago when I was in the market for a new car.

Welcome.
Go for the diesel if you looking for consumption. Why not check out a 320d? It's about the same size with slightly better weight than the X3 and it's frugal.

Thanks for advise. I have a 320i at the moment and need more space with the little one's bikes etc... Therefor the upgrade in what i call space. My hub wanted a double cab, but I dont justify R300k on a Ford where i can get more in a BMW for less...

Hi!

I finally found a X3 2.0D in immaculate condition from a BMW dealership. Its a 2008 with low-ish mileage. Took a extra mechanical plan out on it. It drives awesome and gives me 3 km's to a liter extra. Very happy. Found it in a metallic grey and brand new tyres... This vehicle was looked after and in pristine shape...

Thanks for all your advise and help!

Truly appreciated!

Agreed.
Go for the X and leave Fords the hell alone! Wow. Can't deal hey.

Go test drive a few and get the feel for the car and take it from there!
