Good day all
Had some sleepless nights since Thursday. Workshop opend my intake was concidering removing swirl flaps and egr blank. Too start off with the trottle body and swirl flaps was coverrd in 5mm of tar like simeone dumped black vaseline thru them. No my problem is do I and will the egr blank future build up? Also was told the swirlflaps in good conditiin and have the metal and not plastic pins and advice to keep them. Was tild low diwn torque and response will suffer. I like/prefer responsive engine. I am totally confused to do i keep things stock. I have read so many pro and cons regarding swirl flaps and egr. I just want to keep engine happy and repair cost down and di as much preventative maintanance. The mechanic told me that it looks like the oxygen sensor removed on dpf and it could possibly been deleted before. I am happy with my buy and she been going good. Bmw 2009 x3 2.0d msport. Auto. 170000km. Avg city consump so far 8.4. I exoected bit better. Thanks to those that respond need sime experience advice and fir piece of mind.

If it was my car the swirl flaps would have been in the dust bin by the first day i got the car. Also, egr would have been disconnected the same time and the vacuum pipe plugged. Car was probably used often for short distances by the previous owner causing all the muck build up. Just my advice. All the diesels i have had and also the son's diesels have been deleted (at least seven cars). Rather be safe than sorry!

Swirl flaps delete will have no effect on low down torque and responsiveness, nor will egr blank off.

I would definitely get it done ASAP

Thanks for replies. Yes it seems the right option to remove. Cleaner engine and no issues or surprises in future. With thqt much gunk being removed i hope to see bit improvement on fuel consumption and power delivery....note i am not saying more power.

Was also thinking that the boost/temp sensor sited in the boost pipe connecting to the egr is probably also contaminated and advise that you take it out and clean it with carb cleaner.

Thanks Solo man. Will go ahead and do swirlflaps and the egr. It makes most logical sense.
Ps. What workshops you guys recommend. Heard good things garage 808 and ultra service in bellvilke. They do turbo repairs as well. Who would be good for software as well. Maybe at later stage.

So.......got vehicle back. And here is my findings thus far. Will be doing open road tomorrow and post again. Egr delete and swirl flaps removed and throttle nody cleaned. It was badly clogged up. So big question is how does she drive. Firstly no major difference in power, lag or response. Was hoping response be better. It seems to rev bit more freely. 2nd the motor is bit louder sounds like a diesel now. Ever so slightly inside cabin still the same. Lastly the nice improvement is the fuel consumption. It has dropped between 0.8 -1.5ltr per 100km around town. Hoping ti see open road improvement tomorrow. I avg 7.3ltr per 100km around town and some peak traffic. Peace of mind with swirl flaps is biggest comfort afyer seeing what they looked like. Now for some trouble free km and routune maintanance and my 5000km oil changes. Thanks to those that responded

Chipped and dyno tuned both my and my son's 2l d X3's as well as his wife's 120d at Kosie Swanepoels. Cost was about R3500 each. Round about 400nm's what they are developing now. Mild tune only for peace of mind. Keep in mind that i have had the cats removed as well. All three cars are manual gearbox. On my car i did the cat myself, easy as pie. Took out the cat and knocked out the stuff inside and put it back again. If i remember correctly, i had to cut open the "silencer" and had it rewelded at Hi-Q after i had knocked out the cats. Cost me about R100 for the welding whereas they normally charge about R1k to remove the cat, depending on the amount of work timewise. I would advise to do the cat on your car as well. People say one should replace with straight downpipe but i have done all the cars with the same box but without the stuff inside. Have not had any problems power or noise wise.

What was the reason they replaced the sensor on the transfer case? Do you have the same size wheels/tires on all four wheels with about the same amount of tread on all four? If not, you may experience transfer case failure now or in future. The X3's are very sensitive to wheels/tires that are not all the same circumference, because if they are not (even with tires left unattended and becoming low on pressure), if damages the transfer case causing it to make funny noises when turning, etc.

OK, read your post again and see you have the auto box. Bit more of an pain to remove cat on yours but it seems it could already have been removed by previous owner re the sensor not being there any more. Would still have it chipped though. Nice gain in torque which will work very well with auto gearbox.

Thanks for reply. Will see what future brings. The sensor faulty brought up 4x4 light and brake light orange. Wheels all the same. I have tge msport staggered 18inch. I have read that tire size have big impact. No noises or sounds driving turning etc. Hennie did deep scan with obd and no faults and transfer and gearbox is happy he say maybe tgey steam ckeaned and damaged connection.

Ps....wont give KSD a broken wheelbarrow to tune.

Sorry man not me to bad mouth but personal bad experience and my one mechanic gave them tons of work but when he needed them they shrug him off. Also gave me bad service. Guess we all have different experience with different workshops.
Was stuck in 20kmh traffic on R300 tonight due to accident and terr8ble traffic this afternoon. Ended day on 8 2l/100km. Is this exceptable combined figure and heavy traffic?

Hi what type if funny noise.
My 09 x3 2.0d makes a funny noise when turning left and accelerating.
Almost sounds like right front wheel is locking up. Like when a diff is locked and you turn.

Thanks
