BMW TRACK DAY RESPONSE - HARD QUESTIONS

When a couple of Fanatics and myself were doing track work, we extended an open invitation to all Fanatics to join. We had one brother join us through that invitation, and it was great. That time we were a group of 4 cars, and as it was a open track day, had loads of fun with many other drivers on the track.

So, for the organisers to pull together a group, even a small one is a bloody achievement, so park the sh*t, and accept that you've done well buy putting together a unique, and in my opinion, a fantastic event.

It is however a little sad that the voters here are sort of held accountable for a poor turn out. I would definitely not have voted if I knew I was therefore obligated to race on the day of the event.

Anyway, farts and wind....

I'll definitely be there on the day if it still goes forward, but not with something I'd be willing to track.

Not holding voters accountable Herman, you missing the mark.

BMWFanatics previously held race days, but drags only. We thought we would open it up this year and get a track session done as well IF that was what the masses wanted. We don’t do it to please ourselves, but for the members of this forum. The poll was to give us indication of whether or not it’s a viable option and the results thereof indicated that it was.

Secondly....money doesn’t fall from the sky to host an event of this magnitude where you book out an entire track, it’s one massive bill that has to paid, and in order to do that we need both sponsorship (as much as possible), as well racers registration fees to cover those costs. The drags racers are playing ball and their allocation is already filled with a decent amount of payments in and a group payment being done in the following week.

My concerns were laid out, as I need to give sponsors/racers and the venue feedback with numbers etc. so that they feel they getting their money’s worth. As a planner, that responsibility falls on the teams’ shoulders, and it’s up to us to make decision based on these facts and numbers. This is no open track day or cars and coffee event, hense the questions have to be asked and effort has to be made to find out, IF we as the planners are falling short in either marketing the event, pricing it or any other avenue where there is a shortfall.

Our aim is to give members of BMWFanatics, their families and friends, drivers and spectators the best possible day we can.

With regards to whether this thread has served its purpose and made us think a little a more as planners, drivers and members, we shall know soon enough, but I’m happy to report that since this morning there has been new queries. We have also now opened it up to any brand of car and posted it on various other clubs’ forums as well.

Hope to see whoever isn’t participating there on the day as spectator at least.

Thanks guys.

Firi. Unfortunately you know my situation with the whole Red star and MSA debacle, would have loved to have attended with the 2 race cars, but we simply can’t with all the branding on them etc

Red Star is an awesome Track I’ve done quite a few laps there in a F30 335i, E36 M3 and E36 328 Race Car and I drove back home just fine. If you worried about breaking your car, do a warm up lap 2 or 3 hot laps a cool down lap, if you have enough time maybe another 2 hot laps and a cool down lap again. In the cool down lap try not to use your brakes much and when you park don’t use your handbrake. The car will be fine!

Regarding distance all the tracks are relatively far away, you can’t have it at your doorstep because you will complain about the noise! It’s practically all highway to Red Star! Try going to Phakisa it’s a bit of a drive but who cares when younon the Track it’s all smiles.

Red Star itself is a great venue, facilities are good, they always clean, we even used to have a Braai and sleep over in the chalets with our track days. I would say after Kyalami it’s the next best. On the topic of Kyalami I know for a fact it would cost 5 times the price to host an event like this there.

Finally I know times are tough and we see it also but to those who might say it’s expensive, 1st if it’s not for sponsors you would be paying much more 2nd actually sit down and work out the cost to hire a track and then please take into account all the other costs you don’t think about, like marshals, Medics, time keeper, etc etc it’s a long list

Anyway I hope it still happens and I hope it’s a success

I drove past Red Star today on the way to Witbank. It’s about 40mins east of OR Tambo as a point of reference. The road out that way is actually very good, although there were 1 or 2 sections where the left lane was a bit buggered from the trucks.

I’m looking forward to the track day. Let’s make it happen

As BMW drivers we like to settle the, which is the superior car brand, argument by saying "But which is fastest around a track..."

Now hesitant to enter a track day event :hammerhead:

This makes me laugh every time

Its sad that the guys that voted for track are now not registering.

Firi my suggestion is if you do not get any increase in response in the next few days. Allow track for those that have already registered but try and manage time to make the time for drags longer and see if costs can be covered by extending the list by a few more spots.

Thanks for ALL the responses and the constructive criticism guys.

The interest parties list for track is growing slowly, so I think for now things will stay as is. What I am noticing is there’s a lot of new guys who are joining in as well which is good to see. I would like to see more guys who have tracked before join in as well.

Thanks for the support guys

A bunch of BMW drivers get afforded the opportunity to legally go around corners without having to use indicators and nobody grabs it? :smilebounce:

Hey gents, I might possibly join. Are non BMW cars allowed on the track? My e46 is a daily but my corsa lite I tend to have fun with.
