Hello Thando,
I received this email from one of my mates and I together with a few of my mates would like to enter this track day BMW are hosting, however we are concerned about our motor plans and how this taking part in this event won’t be considered as abusive driving to our machines, what will be BMW’s stance should we suffer mechanical or suspension failure from this event? Will we be covered? Also most of us would consider using semi slicks for the track which are not BMW approved tyres, What are the implicated costs, terms and conditions as listed below. I really would like to know where we would stand and hope that your response would enlighten us.
I look forward to your reply asap so we may plan our trip up…
Good day Kish
Please receive attached more information regarding the Cedar Isle Auto Track Day.
I have put you on the bookings list, please be advised it is based on a first come, first service.
Good day Thando,
Thank you for the informative brochure you have supplied, however you seem to have missed my most important query which I have listed again below,
“we are concerned about our motor plans and how this taking part in this event won’t be considered as abusive driving to our machines, what will be BMW’s stance should we suffer mechanical or suspension failure from this event? Will we be covered? Also most of us would consider using semi slicks for the track which are not BMW approved tyres, What are the implicated costs, terms and conditions as listed below. Based on your/BMW response we will confirm or reject our attendance, Please advise accordingly,
Regards,
Kish
Good day
Please receive response from the BMW Car Club Chairman
Hi Thando,
This is not an uncommon question. Naturally neither I nor the BMW Car Club can speak on behalf of BMW Motorplan, I can only offer you what we have experienced in the past and give our understanding of the implications.
To date in our club we have had only one member have a Motorplan suspended and that was because he had fitted a bolt-on Supercharger to his E92 M3. The kit was discovered by a BMW Aftersales employee who joined us on a breakfast run and came across the owner bragging about his upgrade to his mates. Anyone can reasonably understand that this action was completely justified.
We have never had an issue with a Motorplan being suspended or cancelled as a result of attending one of our track days. As I have mentioned before, driving on track can be less abusive than some of the driving that takes place on our roads which is why we recommend at the very least our road car drivers attend the Track School so that these techniques can be taught by our experienced BMW Driving Experience instructors. Even better would be to attend a full high performance course with them.
As I understand it, BMW Motorplan reserves the right to reject a specific claim if there is evidence of driver abuse. What constitutes that evidence is not up to any of us but BMW Motorplan, and I assume would vary on a case by case basis. As a precaution, some members do blank off their licence plates, licence disc and VIN numbers at the track days. I believe this is more about their insurance policies than Motorplan, hence we worked very hard on arranging track use insurance for our members that is available currently. The concern of tyre use again is more of an insurance concern than Motorplan, however if the incorrect tyre size is used with the incorrect rolling circumference this may have a negative effect on the drive train and increase wear on certain components.
I hope this answers your question, I cannot provide much more information on the subject than this.
Kind regards,
Michael Broom
