Michael Broom has said if anyone has questions about the event or Motor plan you are welcome to call him and get clarity.

If he has an official statement why not post it up will be much easier for those thinking of attending and Michael will not get bombarded with questions :)

Moranor........i have just called him for you. He is not at a PC right now to reply himself and has asked me to.

Basically how it works with MP is, for example, if you have just had your brake pads changed and they usually last say 40k kms. Suddenly you put in a claim after 5k kms they will ask why they havent lasted like they usually should. If you said to them oh i was on Kyalami all of saturday, more than likely they will not replace the pads as why should they.......same as if you modify your motor or change the mapping and something goes wrong, they will not pay. Doing a few laps will not cause the motorplan to be cancelled and Michael has never heard of anything like that in all his years working at BMW.

Similar to your vehicle insurance, if you crash it on the track make sure they will pay out as many dont.

I hope this helps those who are considering coming on Saturday.

Guys....

to add to this thread, I did send an email to the contact details provided in the first post...

my email sent 10 September 2014:
Hello Thando,

I received this email from one of my mates and I together with a few of my mates would like to enter this track day BMW are hosting, however we are concerned about our motor plans and how this taking part in this event won’t be considered as abusive driving to our machines, what will be BMW’s stance should we suffer mechanical or suspension failure from this event? Will we be covered? Also most of us would consider using semi slicks for the track which are not BMW approved tyres, What are the implicated costs, terms and conditions as listed below. I really would like to know where we would stand and hope that your response would enlighten us.

I look forward to your reply asap so we may plan our trip up…

The response on 15 September 2014:
Good day Kish

Please receive attached more information regarding the Cedar Isle Auto Track Day.

I have put you on the bookings list, please be advised it is based on a first come, first service.

My reply on the same day:
Good day Thando,

Thank you for the informative brochure you have supplied, however you seem to have missed my most important query which I have listed again below,

“we are concerned about our motor plans and how this taking part in this event won’t be considered as abusive driving to our machines, what will be BMW’s stance should we suffer mechanical or suspension failure from this event? Will we be covered? Also most of us would consider using semi slicks for the track which are not BMW approved tyres, What are the implicated costs, terms and conditions as listed below. I really would like to know where we would stand and hope that your response would enlighten us.”

Based on your/BMW response we will confirm or reject our attendance, Please advise accordingly,

Regards,

Kish

Their response:
Good day

Please receive response from the BMW Car Club Chairman

Hi Thando,

This is not an uncommon question. Naturally neither I nor the BMW Car Club can speak on behalf of BMW Motorplan, I can only offer you what we have experienced in the past and give our understanding of the implications.

To date in our club we have had only one member have a Motorplan suspended and that was because he had fitted a bolt-on Supercharger to his E92 M3. The kit was discovered by a BMW Aftersales employee who joined us on a breakfast run and came across the owner bragging about his upgrade to his mates. Anyone can reasonably understand that this action was completely justified.

We have never had an issue with a Motorplan being suspended or cancelled as a result of attending one of our track days. As I have mentioned before, driving on track can be less abusive than some of the driving that takes place on our roads which is why we recommend at the very least our road car drivers attend the Track School so that these techniques can be taught by our experienced BMW Driving Experience instructors. Even better would be to attend a full high performance course with them.

As I understand it, BMW Motorplan reserves the right to reject a specific claim if there is evidence of driver abuse. What constitutes that evidence is not up to any of us but BMW Motorplan, and I assume would vary on a case by case basis. As a precaution, some members do blank off their licence plates, licence disc and VIN numbers at the track days. I believe this is more about their insurance policies than Motorplan, hence we worked very hard on arranging track use insurance for our members that is available currently. The concern of tyre use again is more of an insurance concern than Motorplan, however if the incorrect tyre size is used with the incorrect rolling circumference this may have a negative effect on the drive train and increase wear on certain components.

I hope this answers your question, I cannot provide much more information on the subject than this.

Kind regards,

Michael Broom

Based on this I can safely assume that this is a do it at your own risk event. BMW offer motorplan and may pull it if they choose too...

***Credit must also be given to Cedar Isle auto for arranging this and BMW Car Club Gauteng for putting this together***

It's a tough one this. Personally I feel the MP question is secondary, your primary concern should be insurance. Photos and videos do get taken and if you do not have the correct policy in place and something goes wrong, it would be best if the insurance investigator didn't get his/her hands on any pics of you goings sideways.

As for MP I understand it to be basically an insurance policy for car repairs. What the MP guys care about is serious engine modifications and competitive use. I can't see that driving a few laps around a track will constitute automatic MP cancellation, that would be silly. What I can see is people running through a set of brakes and taking their car to BMW on Monday morning (with the Bridgestone sticker still stuck to the windshield) and asking for a new set of pads. That is also silly and would obviously raise suspisions.

It is quite grey and I can understand why some guys are nervous about it, but I reckon if you are not foolish about it, and don't expect to do a whole season of time trials while BWM maintains your track car then you will be just fine.

Come and enjoy.

Cedar Isle gave me a contact (Les Michaelis insurers) that are willing to cover track days.

Will see what the quote and cover looks like and revert.

It was a good day at the track. Impressive turnout actually.
Didn't really speak to anyone else besides Bruce, who had an pretty solid run. Well done again Sir.

Highlight of the day was seeing Sav's new F30 run.
We were standing on the pit wall watching and there were two cars abreast going down the pit straight, then the beast came up behind and overtook them both on the inside, 3 abreast now. Basically the car was at full throttle 2m away just on the other side of the pit wall, kicked up so much dust as it is the dirty side of the track, wish I got it on camera.

Was also there. Saw Bruce turning out some good laps. Well Organised too.

There seemed to be plenty of casualties though, at least 1 per session

Yeah there were quite a few offs, was funny to hear one of the the tow truck drivers bitching. Didn't see the Scirocco incident but it sounded serious, the car looked stuffed.
