2015 BMW X5 Security Plus to debut in Moscow
A year after the debut of the third-generation BMW X5, the Bavarian automaker is set to unveil the X5 Security Plus model at the upcoming Moscow motor show (where else?).
Let us spoil it for you; it will look a lot like the standard X5 on the outside. The 2015 X5 Security Plus is the third factory-armored version of BMW's popular SUV, and the latest iteration has just completed certification testing.
The armored SUV will offer VR6-level ballistic protection, which is only one level below that offered by the current-generation BMW 7-series High Security model. Even so, the new X5 Security Plus will be able to defeat NATO 7.62x51 rounds fired from a distance of 10 meters, which is a popular level of protection in the world of armored passenger cars -- and one that is unfortunately becoming the new baseline standard in many markets. That covers the majority of rounds fired by widespread FN FAL, Kalashnikov and comparable rifles, though there are greater levels of protection out there for large-caliber, armor-piercing rounds.
