'87 316i was a carbed model...... Had one.

BMW M10. The legend.

Worked really well with a Weber conversion if I recall, however, why dont you consider an injection conversion???!!! I mean, if you are messing around with old oily things in yards...

Can find any E12 with an M10 and the conversion will be fairly straightforward.

No more cold start issues, more power, way better fuel economy...... And if I remember, most of the plumbing is already there.....

Just my 2c worth....

Ok what would the costs be in doing that kind of conversion? I've never even looked at the possibility before. Cost is a pretty major factor atm.

Conversion wll really depend on the donor vehicle.

Anything out of the 80s with an M10 motor. If you look around, you could find a few non-runners for little money.... Consult yards and classifieds. I sepnd hours in the junkmail.

82-86 E12 used the K-jetronic injection. Should be a bolt-on to your motor. Haven't done it myself, but most of it should fit OK.

You can go aftermarket with a modern injection system, but that will be $$$s. You have to decide what the car is worth to you.

The best advice I ever got was:

Buy the top of the range of a particular car that you like. The costs of running any car is much the same accross the range, so, you might as well have all the bells and whistles, and in the end the resale will be a bit higher....

Hope it helps.

I'll call around a bit and see what I can rustle up. I'm not all that mechanically oriented - this is our family car - but the advantages you list would be great. Cold starting is always a pain, fuel economy and etc. I'm just not sure the extent of work I'd be setting myself up for. But yeah your advice definitely helps.
