BMW parts prices....again!

I just order some rear suspension parts from place in USA. All part are OEM brands Lemforder mostly. Now the parts+shipping+ customs == 50% of what does BMW quoted.

Sometimes there is times that is reasonable at agents and would give you much more hassle to search around than worth it.

Hey Rick,

I have some E34 M5 parts for you, sump gasket, six plugs, oil filter & air filter from when i still had one. Never got round to the service I was planning.

O yes & two new tail lights, wonder where I got those?

OOOH I'm putting in new oil tomorrow in the misguided hope the engine may not be trashed, now those goodies would go down well.....

Local dealer quoted me R3000 for a viscous clutch and R900 for new fan on the 540i. So that's R3900 total and I would've had to wait like 3 weeks before I could get it. So I ended up buying it from the states and ended up paying R1600 for both parts AND shipping.

Then I got a quote from a local dealer for a thermostat. They wanted R1100. In the states it worked out R160 without shipping.

Clutch for my car at local dealer, R8700. From the states, R3900 without shipping.

These are all the exact same parts. There is just no BMW logo on the box it comes in. The local prices are crazy and as such I now avoid the dealers completely. I don't even bother to ask for a price on anything there. Now I just do a little research on the part I want and then just get it from the states.

But guys you must also remember that USA pays the lowest duties on their cars and parts, thats why it is so cheap over there, that is one reason i envy them. SA duties are much higher, sometimes less than other countries, but definitely too high for us.:thumbdo:

its definitely not just bmw...

my wife drives an xtrail. we recently got the check engine light on the dash, and the code said it was the crank angle sensor.

R999.00 each from any nissan dealership in sa. did i mentioned there are two in the car. lol so thats R2k for maintenance...

until i check online in the usa. the parts ranged from us$30-50... thats a potential saving of R1400, on a local cost of R2000.

sharks!!!:argh:

Foglamp bulb R184 @ BMW rippoff rippers Hatfield.
The same item @ my local autospares shop: R32
Its been 28 months (according to the autospares invoice) without any issues.
Therefore the qualiy is just as good. I could replace it six times over, before I reach the BMW price.

Some parts CAN be cheaper.

It doesnt matter what car you drive, if its in South Africa you are going to get shafted.

Fiat palio engine rebuild after a broken cam belt R32k from the agents. R4.5k from a local mechanic including parts.

Merc C250 Ignition R12k.
Merc Heater solenoid valve R6.6k

Our Peugeot partner van has a set repair fee of R6k+ nothing has ever packed up on that car that has cost less than R6k.

I heard from a mechanic that Kia is currently the most expensive part you can buy. Fuel injectors are like R21k each or something for the K2700.

it definitely is not just BMW in south africa, all manufacturers have jumped on that bandwagon..

example :

2 years or so ago i needed a new oilpump for a rebuilt engine out of my NISSAN 300ZX .. magnus nissan in pretoria quoted me R4900-00 for said pump.
then i proceeded to order the exact same pump from COURTESTY NISSAN in texas, usa.. a fully functioning nissan dealer, that also sells spares on the web.
after buying the pump in dollar, paying shipping, duties and VAT, i had the pump in my hands for a total cost of R1900-00..

i dont know how they justify these kind of markups..
