BMW Oil Service from R890

So I gather you have to use the oil that they specify? Not keen to change oil brands just for a special price. And for just an oil change this is not such a huge saving as they make it out to be. Besides, assuming this is a normal service interval, then they are excluding other important things such as the air filter, brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter, and and and...

Your thoughts?

im surprised myself shell I think that's why their service is cheap its shell promotion ..

Just out of interest sake, you guys know that BMW changed its "recommended" oil to Shell a good while back right? All the BMW recommended oil actually means is that a certain oil company gave BMW a better deal or some new tools for their workshops or both and in exchange for BMW "recommending" the oil. BMW recommend oil has long known to be a farce.
That being said there is nothing wrong with Shell oil and I have been using it whether BMW recommended it or not.

What I find ironic about this whole thing is the point they are trying to get across that you need to service your car to get it to perform optimally, yet BMW is the chief culprits when to ludicrously long service intervals.

Personally I would not go for this kind of deal, lower price means more cars and also lower profit margin per car which means more cars have to pushed through the old sausage factory....and in workshops where corners are already cut on the simplest of things under normal circumstances I wouldn't want my car to be there when it is more rushed that normal.

I dont have any brand loyalty to oil, to me oil is oil as long as it's fully synthetic and the correct grade. i've used liqui molly, Castrol, shell, etc, its all the same to me.

I agree with you about them taking short cuts and doing the service as fast as possible, ie not letting all the old oil drain properly.

Oil and oil filter change can be done myself in 30 minutes and at less than R890.
and knowing that it was done properly(or at least to my satisfaction).

I wonder if they wash the car for you also as part of the R890

Ahem...

http://www.jaguar.co.za/jaguar-range/xe/index.html

.....scroll down a little:

"XE is one of the most cost-efficient cars in its class with extended service intervals of up to 34000 kilometers”

:yikes:

Try this one on for size:

How far have you gone until your F3X's first service? I'm a little concerned.

My F30 328i (which turned one year old last week with its production week date being 20/05/2012) is now on 25,000mls and the iDrive is still indicating 2000mls until the first service. The criteria being an engine oil change. This is much further than my previous BMW's and other cars have gone until their first service, which is around 12k-16k miles.

Out of interest got quote for oil from the dealer last weekend.

For an e46 6 cylinder the oil should set you back around R630, though this is the price without any discount so depending how well you know your parts guy you could get this for a lower price.
Can't remember the cost for a oil filter but even at R200 (it is definitely less than this, and you could get a discount on this as well) you will still be paying less than this "deal"

M54 oil filter around R160. Shell helix can be got cheaper than that from midas or goldwagen.

Just another marketing ploy by BMW to get more people to service their cars at dealers, nothing more.

Agreed, just used the dealer price as this is most likely what they would use.
Also with the dealer oil you have the added factor that you don't actually know which shell oil it is as it just comes in a BMW branded bottle, with some catchphrase like "Oil fine for a BMW" on it.

I want to read what I posted again, and then explain to me in your own words how what you said makes any sense
