BMW most stolen car brand
wheels 24 - 2011-04-06 07:55

BMW X5, Land Rover Range Rover, BMW M3 and the Audi RS4 remain the UK’s most desirable cars for today’s thieves, according to the latest figures from stolen vehicle recovery expert, TRACKER.

These four cars all retain their top positions in TRACKER’s top ten most frequently stolen and recovered vehicles of 2010

"Once again our top ten shows the thieves favourites with the Mercedes SLK and CLK also remaining at the top of the league," says Stephen Doran, managing director of TRACKER.

"The VW Golf is an interesting new entry at number nine, proving that it’s not just owners of prestige vehicles who need to take note."

Amazingly, according to TRACKER’s statistics, nearly 84% of stolen cars recovered by them last year were driven away by thieves with the use of keys, indicating that owners are not particularly vigilant when it comes to keeping their vehicle keys safe (enough).

Im soooooo glad the X6 isnt on that list :)

yet... :mmm:

84% were found with the thieves driving with keys... just goes to show.

I have a little clip that I use to clip my keys to my jeans and then put my keys in my pocket. If someone tries to take them, I'll know.

This should be a stat list for "borrowed for a joyride" not stolen. As most are often only used for this purpose only. A joyride and then dumped.

Apparently in the UK its a major pastime hobby for the young youths (thugs) to do?! :dunno:

Would be interesting to see the list that is dedicated to actual still missing and reported as "Stolen".

And mine was in 7th place in 2009. Also stolen and recovered an hour later by Tracker, but I had the only set of keys for that car in my pocket.:cursin:

should add too though that the level of house protection in the UK is far less than out there-there are no buglar guards on the windows,no security gates, most houses are not alarmed,no armed response units. You can get into virtually any house with no tools whatsoever if you are that way inclined and most people leave their keys right by the front door......those burglaries are mostly preventable.....Also now with keyless entry you can get into a car with a mobile phone and some cars have remote start too which makes it even easier to nick a car.....ALso note that those are stolen recovered cars and only people who can afford it have trackers on their cars-hence why most of them are higher spec cars like BMW's

OOOOOOOOOOO Kak - i just bought an X5!

At least in SA you know they want the 3 series, the GTi, and alarmingly as of recent, the new Amarok! My mom works at a VW dealership and they have had a few stolen in the past few months!!!!

At least i know my X will be safe - I stay in the middle of nowhere :)

Thank God my 11 year old M5 is now too slow to be considered a worthy car to steal!

Some good points, thanks for adding perspective.

Are there no Toyota's and Golfs in the UK ? :)

VAG are huge here but toyota's not so much......They also don't have trackers fitted on them which is why they don't show on the TRACKER stolen/recovered list

In SA, according to the BMW Anti Hijack course I was on, most popular to steal is the Citi Golf, Nissan 1400, Certain 3 Series BMW's (320i; 335i and M3), Audi A4 (turbo models) Mercs C180K's and Toyota's Hilux.

Hmm interesting indeed...

My 2006 320d M-Sport was stolen last year July...without a tracker :(

Miraculously they recovered it in February this year, with only minor damages like Passenger window knocked out and scratches on the bumpers..

I'm thinking of selling the vehicle as I don't have any other option(unfortunately already bought another car), does anybody perhaps know what I can ask for it seeing as it only has 139000km on the clock and lots of extra's...

Thread necromancer, you should have started a new thread.

These stats are useless, since they are for the UK, and have very little applicability here.

On your 320d - it is now a Code 3 and you will have to disclose that to the buyer, or suffer dearly under the CPA. That will severely affect your resale value. Look at the prices for similar cars on autotrader and then make up an attractive price from that. Extras count for nothing unless you are buying a new car.

Is it registered as a code 3 stolen and recovered?

If so you wont get much because it cant be financed and for some reason insurance is way higher on them.

Where do most car thefts and hijackings occur in SA?
That's one thing I'm concerned about. As a young guy, I go out to parties and what not, so I wanna know which areas are high risk and which are low risk.

I know to avoid Rivonia road in Sandton, that place in one hell of a hot spot.
