BMW mods, what's in, what's out?

I think any mod to any vehicle needs to be well thought out. Somethings work somethings don't. Where they came out OEM that way or not. I think the important thing is to ask oneself do I have any taste? :dunno:, best ask 10 friends from a broad background of friends as well. If there is one no then don't mod. Ofcourse Bangle should have done the taste test aswell:banghead:

I have to be honest, I actually love the bangle design, even the bangle butt...

E60/E65's do it for me, its differant... but I like it.

Also you can see the bagle design still in the F01/F10....

Personally, I don't car what people's opinions are :)
I customise my car according to what I like

There are always gonna be people hating on this and that (and I am one of the biggest critics around), but at the end of the day, it's your car and your money
Do what you want and be happy with the results (note, this does not mean you'll be satisfied.. coz a true modder is never satisfied :pimp:)

So what if the rest of the world thinks you have absolutely no taste :mmm:
It beats doing these to please the masses

In fact there are many people that think cars should be left as the factory intended. What BS is that :nono:

I remember when I just got my baby back after doing all the AC Schnitzer decal, and the Tii striping...
out of about 30 people, there would always be one saying it looked crap.
I loved it, and believe it looked good.

In 2004 I remember my joy at finding a totally un fsked with and factory original 325is Evo II and bought it on the spot.

As desparately as I wanted to mod stuff, even if it was changing the sound system and exhaust, I just couldn't do it to what I considered a total classic.

My E39 was a different story, but my case was every mod had to be BMW original add ons and to that effect I must be the only idiot in South Africa that bought an original Zender body kit direct from BMW at the insane BMW price lol and then went and paid more for 2nd hand buckled BMW M5 rims I had to have straightened than buy identical looking reps cheaper.

My E34 was a different story again with all the leather stuff I did, but then again to keep it tastefull all the leatherwork was based on something available from BMW, even the custom door linings were based on the M stripe theme.

I have lost count of items for BMW's I bought on Ebay that seemed like a good idea at the time, then when I put it on the car it cheapened the effect and went straight into the bin.

I kind of see mods this way, the harder I have to hunt it down, think it out, visualise it and look at hundreds of pictures even photoshop it and then import it from wherever at whatever cost because it's really unique and in good taste, it usually looks the part. If I can just get the mod at the spares shop around the corner, everybody has done it already and I just feel like a sheep Baaaahahaha

I totally agree with the whole "keep it original"
all mods must be done with bmw parts, or like brabus, alpina, hamann, schnitzer, the big names in bmw customs
dont go and put porsche emblems on your car, :nono: cause you are porsche fan, :puke:
or audi daytime lights cause it looks cool on the audi, and now youre bmw must suffer.
if you are going to mod the crap out of it, then at least do it with bmw stuff.
:pimp:

E30 good - Simple stance mods. Shadowlined brightwork.
E30 Bad - Faupinas (Faux Alpinas), Lenso Eagle rims, 325IS replicas, bad fibreglass bodykits.

E34 Good - Genuine Alpina wheels, Style 5s (or other OEM BMW wheels), ACS kit.
E34 Bad - Wheels bigger than 18'' that aren't period, Angel eyes, rat-look (rust, hanging bumpers).

E46 Bad - CSL stuff on M3s that aren't CSLs. Ricer carbon body panels. Drug-dealer wheels

BMWs are aesthetically difficult to improve on, tastefully. Improve the stance, give it bigger wheels maybe, but too much and you ruin it, IMO.

Well when going hunting for my E34 I was looking for a junker with a good motor, something that I could turn onto a loud ass track car, but finding the one in the condition that I did, I could not give myself permission to strip it and put in a rollcage.

I tend to agree with both Rick and Revo, Classics are classics and to spite the highest urge to change, they really should not, the represent a history and sense of ownership, however revo is also perfectly right, its your bucks, its your car, make it look the way that you want it to look... even if Revo is totally wrong about chrome :)

Its a damm fine line between awesome and rice... and a huge differance between bolt on and art....

Out - Chrome look aftermarket projector headlights
Out - Chrome wheels
Out - Subaru/Evo spoilers
Out - Fibreglass bodykits or any body kit that is not one of the BMW ones
Out - A e46 ///M3 bumper on any non-///M3 e46 (unless you have an ///M engine in your e46)

In - CSL (or CSL rep) wheel
In (marginally) - Alpina wheel

I also agree that you shouldn't have ///M badges on your non-///M beemer, but unfortunately BMW stuck a bunch of ///M badges on my car

i think everyone posting what's in and not should post their cars to showcase their ideas of the "in's" in styling

let's see it
