Just some info for some of you looking for a thermostat housing on the E36/46 with m52 fitted. If this post is considered inappropriate or as advertising pls remove.
After falling around between a couple of parts stores and getting quoted R1400 for the complete unit I finally tracked one down 2. One is similar to original and the other alluminium, both without thermostats.
Both retail for less than R200 @ Goldwagen.

Hope this saves someone falling around and wasting time like I did.

Thank you for the tip. Thermostat housings are a problem that I have had experience with on my BMWs over the years.

Thanks to BEMOW, I paid a few hundred for a new ones. R200 is a bargain indeed.

For some of us here, savings like this are very important in keeping our BMWs and enjoying them!

the ally is a aftermarket replacement unit. the m50 also used a plastic housing and they are rubbish

Goldwagen are the cheapest as the ally unit sells for R200. a bargain in my books.

I'm using the Ally one from Goldwagen on my track car, fits perfectly but have to say the finishing on it is not perfect out the box. I spent about an hour with various small files to clean out the flanges inside where the different bits of aluminium were joined together to make the unit. Some bits in there are kind of loose so if you don't do this they may dislodge over time and possibly work their way through to the waterpump eventually and cause other problems, nevermind messing with the flow of the water through the housing.

Having said that, R200 and some time with a file still beats the plastic overpriced OEM one which is destined to become brittle eventually...
