Victor Reinz head gasket set available from Alert Engine Spares . Rings , not sure ?

How long do you intend to keep the car ? It is best to have the bore checked for size and ovality , but the ammount of labour and the cost of pistons if a rebore is required may not make it worth the whole story .

I'm not planning to keep it for long at the moment, my plan is just to get it going and upgrade to a 325i e36, I love the E36's that's what I can afford at the moment. I got a quote from Alert Engine good price, I also prefer Victor Reinz. Thanks, I'll see what I can get tomorrow. Is it really necessary to carry old head gasket? Is the any difference between m50 head gasket for 320i and 325i? I know the rings do differ as I have to take along one piston for the correct size.

if the pistons are different sizes then i would think the gaskets differ also... replace the gasket and bolts leave the rings seeing as you going to sell anyway... because they may not need replacing yet...

The bore size is 84 mm for the 325i and 80 mm for the 320i , so head gaskets are different .
The head bolts are stretch bolts that need careful fitting and tightening .
If rings are cheap , say R200 or so then maybe fit new rings , car should go better with better compression......may be better when you sell .
Also look at a e34 525i 24 valve , it is the same motor as the e36 325i .

Yeah!!! Cheap rings, any idea where can I get them in Pta, I'm not willing to buy expensive staff for this car at the moment, as I'm not keeping it.

The piston rings seized and thats what caused no compression, bad head gasket

Looks like water got in there - leaked from head gasket . You can try Alert spares , maybe send Leonard at Dent Doctor a pm , he had a contact for cheap pistons etc for the 328i he was rebuilding .

Is this m50 timing correct, it looks correct to me. The mechanic used his own method not the BMW special tools. The crank rotates fine, piston and valves don"t collide. Any advice or comments?

looks about right to me... do you have pics of the square parts at the back where the timing tool normally sits?

Unfortunately the space was bad that I couldn't get good images from the back block, I saw both squares with dots facing up but turned a little bit to the exhaust manifold, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say

not sure what you saying but the squares should be in line with eachother because the tool basically holds them square with eachother...

Thanks Bud, the square block seem to be correct or similar to the one shown on the article. Will bookmark the vanos procedure and double check, thanks a lot, I'll keep updating

If you put a straight edge on the blocks at the ends of the cams they should be level , not tilted to one side .
