BMW M4 vs .....

With the new M4 almost fully specced at a touch over R1.2M, there are quite a few alternatives to consider in this price bracket and thought it would be interesting to get some opinions from everyone....

First up is a 997 Porsche Turbo (low mileage), I've driven one many times and loved it...yes it's outdated to a certain extent but it's still sexy, goes like a bat out of hell and has grip for days....

Second up is a brand new Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS. I have not driven the Cayman or Boxster as yet but love the lines of the cars, reviews are all good...they down on power compared to the M4 but make up for it in the handling department...only 2 seats though making it less practical (if you need 4 seats that is).....

Thirdly is a low mileage Ferrari 360 Modena F1, mint condition, also outdated, down on power, but still a beautiful and capable car....again only 2 seats....

Lastly is a low mileage 997 Porsche GT3....again a great car...track capable...sexy and fast....

I'm sure there are plenty other great cars in this price bracket....feel free to add any if you like....keen to see everyone's thoughts

PS I have an M4 on order, and have pretty much made up my mind that I'm taking it...but thought this would be an interesting debate...

I suppose it depends on what you want, but you raise an extremely relevant point. A brand new M4 is most certainly a depreciation trap, and the used alternatives are a testament to this. I would never advise anyone to buy a new M4/3 right now. At R1.2bar, i feel like that price point is above what the BMW brand can support. So rather just wait two years and save probably R400k at least.

As far as the alternatives go, it really depends on what you want. I would say the GT3 is by far the best drivers car, and hence the best value proposition. Values have stabilised at 1.1bar and a 997.2 (3.8) GT3 will be a future classic, mark my works.

I love the new Boxster, but again, buying one new is simply a depreciation trap. It will be a fine buy in 3 to 4 years time.

The Ferrari is a relatively safe option in deprecation terms. 360's have bottomed out at R1.2, and despite being old, it still delivers a pretty good italian super car experience. Not my favourite Ferrari, and definitely not a daily driver, but a cool option if you're looking for the italian super car experience.

I wouldn't even consider a 911 turbo. 4WD and turbo, you might as well buy an Audi.

Adis...are you in finance..

No, I just know that there is a smart way to buy cars, and a not so smart way to buy cars.

If you can let go of the need to keep up with the jones and have the latest and greatest, you will open a world of owning cars you never thought possible given what they cost when new.

AdiS...You obviously have'nt spent much time with a 911 Turbo.

You should try it sometime...you will be pleasantly surprised.

Please don't tell me you are comparing a 911 Turbo to an Audi. Worlds apart comes to mind.

It was an exaggerated comparison. I was referencing the fact that a 911 turbo is both awd and turbocharged, two things which somewhat mute the driving experience in comparison to a GT3. I'm sure there are tons of people who would prefer a 911 turbo, but a Gt3 is just so much more special. To people who value a purer driving experience, I think it's a valid opinion.
