Howzit guys,

Has anyone received an message from BMW that your 140i has been recalled for a DME update, if so does anyone know the reason for the recall? I went to 2 different BMW dealerships and called BMW South Africa and no one could answer me what the update is all about, i did some reading and the guys in Europe are not saying anything good about this update.

Yes it is very strange. BMW told me the update will be done automatically on my next service. What to expect is smoother gear changes, loss of engine power and responsive as well as no more pops and bangs in sport and/or sport plus mode. This is what a few guys have experienced in Europe with their cars after the update.

These were the effects on the Jan 2019 DME update, the latest one is to apply the latest ECU security locks for your ECU...

My M240i went in, and they did this stupid update.
What I can tell you is that nothing has changed in terms of the way that the car behaves.

However, they did change the software version and apparently, this new update is to help them detect if your car has been tuned.
So as soon as they plug in their computer, it immediately flags a message that says "tuned detected, run further tests."

Hi guys,

Was told the same when I took my car in today. This is for the F30 340i.
Update is due to the bad fuel quality as they had issues with some cars having piston problems.

Great! I can’t wait to take my car in to make it slower and less responsive. I guess Motorplan has its downsides.
Smoother gear changes because it’s just slower
