Hi guys. In the market for a 2016/7 BMW M140i. Please advise, what are the common problems with the car, what should I look out for? Lastly how’s the maintenance on the car?

I had had mine for 4 years. for me the 140i was the glitch in the matrix. its an awesome car. one of a kind amongst hatch backs. they are reliable, I had never had an issues with mine. sitting on 66k km. cons, the ride is pretty stiff so on bumpy road its not the most comfortable and gets a bit unsettled if driving fast. I can be ok on fuel but if u drive it hard it drinks. don't look for anything below 10l/ 100 on normal driving. driven hard it averages 12/13. its becoming very sort after so finding one is getting hard. if I find a nice clean one with full BMW history do it!. There are more M4 and M3's on sale on auto trader than M140i. Spec wise, if you can find a shadow addition go for it, or before face lift look for the one with bigger screen, u do find electrical seats but that spec was hard to come by.

Thanks Sibonelo. I’ve shortlisted a few options that I’ve found. Definately will take your advice. Thanks for the reply bro. Mechanical wise, what are some of the major issues with the vehicle? I’m going to look for full service history but will also do a dekra inspection on the car before buying it so that I can be sure it’s in tiptop condition.

Honestly - not much.
Gen1 B58 did have coolant issues (I'm sure you know they are charge cooler, not air cooled), so you have a reservoir for radiator & another for charge cooler). Sometimes the seals go and this is what happens, other times, magic. But not exactly a massive issue, and easy fix - add coolant lol.
There are rare instances of water pumps going - but again not common at all.
And even more rare is that some did have piston issues - but not common at all.

Add an aftermarket warranty for peace of mind. Its a performance engine and will have been driven properly if not a few times.

But B58 has proven itself. Its insanely strong, and ridiculously easy to make good power on basic mods (dp + TU + eth + OTS map).

Great engines. #B58FTW (not biased at all lol)

Brilliant engine.
Engine issues was resolved via software update that adjusted the power curve due to fueling issues. (was done under recall)
The stock fuel pump was just not cutting it and mixed with poor fuel quality in SA. Hence why the Gen2 fuel pump is a must when you add a tune.

Only issue i had on mine was the coolant cap that started to leak but new caps are not expensive through BMW.
The OEM turbo did also get a hairline crack on the housing which was replaced under motorplan.

There's other common issues that are shared on the f series chassis across the range so maybe do some reading up on that.

Engine wise B58 FTW
