So I went today
Joined the Auto Bavaria breakfast run to Casalinga, breakfast in Waterfall and then back to the track. Hats off to them for pulling that together, the engagement over the week and what was clearly lots of pre-event planning - Was a ton of fun (hopefully no love letters coming from metro...). Michelin was in attendance as well to assess everyone's tyres, wear patterns etc.
What worked
This is the first motoring-related event at Kyalami that actually had decent parking available.
The pop up dealership (largest of its kind apparently) had some decent deals and a LOT of cars available to look at.
M VIP area was well attended but not claustrophobic. I think the company we had also helped. Waiters were friendly and kept us going with a steady stream of snacks without having to flag them down (I attended another conference there recently and it was as though they were avoiding eye contact on purpose LOL).
We didn't use the kids facilities this time round but there were activities for them.
Quite a few cars that I wanted to see were there (DTM car, the CS, new M5) and some interesting stuff eg: 333i, M1. BMW CCG was there with a stall but seemed to be still setting up for tomorrow.
Next iteration of the S63tu
Needs a drop...
Interior looks awesome
M1
333i
DTM M4
What didn't
Stupid card system to buy anything - you needed to buy a card for R15 and then load money onto it to buy anything... even if you had cash, you needed to load the value onto the card.
Lots of people didn't get to do the driving experiences... I didn't see anyone doing the learner driver activity... but that said it was quite far away
Content wise, there was a lot of waiting around (DTM car for instance, for interview with the DTM team that never happened (at least not that we stuck around for) and things were not running according to the timetable. I think those that came with runs from dealers got a very different experience overall to those who arrived and had only content from the festival.
Drags down the main straight? Give me a break... Took forever to set up and if you blinked you'd miss it.
Food vendors were a mixed bag. Some of the stuff was horrible.
Was it worth R150 which is what a normal ticket cost? Definitely. Was it worth R500? Probably if you went with company and planned to take it easy on the drinks - good views and service. It was pretty clear that some of the dealers were using it to entertain their HV clients. R2500 for the VVIP? Nope - not by a long shot. Not a big enough drinker and definitely not combined with a car related event... I'm sure those entertaining clients etc. would have seen value in it.
Just my 2c.
