BMW Going FWD

Honestly, who cares? If you are worried about the soul of BMW you should have been worried when suddenly they slapped turbo motors into every single model in the line-up....or maybe when they started playing engine noises over the stereo, cause the motors sound like nothing......or maybe when they launched the first X5.........in the end it comes down to the 99% of people (especially in SA) that are not car (or BMW) enthusiasts, that won't care that they are a driving a FWD diesel MPV, that comes with a choice of either playing either I6 or V8 sounds over the stereo...the only thing that matters is that it has a BMW badge on the outside and they can tell other people they drive a BMW.

Edit: BMW also has reputation for not giving a rat's ass about their customers......how much do you think they care about what 1% of BMW drivers think.

Well I chose a 1 series over a new A class simply because it's RWD vs FWD. Having said that, had a go in my friends A200 with AMG kit on and it drives brilliantly and no issues on the corners at all. BUT!! That merc has zero grin factor and I can only say its because it's FWD.

I for one would never even consider buying a Fwd BMW when there are sooo many other options out there if you going to mess with the DNA that much why not look at other badges?

GF: I dont see the point of getting a BMW then

If women dont want a Fwd BMW who is going to buy them?
My GF does not drive hard and as far as she is concerned a car is the thing you put your shopping in to take it home

In my opinion there is no advantage of FWD apart from the fact that it is an exercise in cost cutting from a production point of view. The only benefit to the consumer is that a fwd car costs less than rwd due to the fact that there is no driveshaft. Also fwd cars do not have a transmission tunnel running all the way to the back of the car once again saving on production costs. Surely a transmission tunnel would be a good thing for a car from a stiffness point of view as it makes the suspension work less as the chassis is more composed thereby improving handling.

Ever ask yourself how your neighbours Hyundai i20 has more gadgets than your BMW? It's because money saved in production costs due to the fact it is fwd is then spent on gadgets inside the car to distract you from the fact that you are driving a car that was designed with a compromise in the first place by being fwd.
