BMW - General Electronics

I've created another thread specifically related to ECU repairs on BMW and Mini.

In addition to that service, I also repair other electronic modules on the cars. An interesting trend I've been noticing is that the FRM (Footwell Module) on the cars stop working.

The symptom of this is that all the lights on your car remain on and that the front windows stop working. I've had 3 cases of this happening this week alone! You're then forced to pay exorbitant prices from the dealer (R6k) to replace this. You might be lucky and find the exact same module from a scrapyard but these are generally north of R2k, if you lucky enough to find the exact one which is pretty rare. And if you do find one, it still needs to be coded to the car!

I'm offering this repair service, and service on other modules (like the CAS, JBE, IHKA, etc) for half the price of what you will pay for the cheapest replacement units from a scrapyard and I make sure that it's correctly coded to your car!

I can also help with the repair of audio related items and the upgrade or retrofit of these modules.

Give me a call if any of these weird gremlins pop up and I promise to do my best to get you going quickly and affordably!

Great Stuff G-man! ... Now all you need to add to the list is iDrive controllers!

Thanks bud! Yeah, that one is still a bit of a mission to me. Tell you what, you think you can live without yours for a little? I can then see if I can strip the parts off an E60 one to get it going. The opto-couplers in that one is almost impossible to get.

Hallo Gert,

Do you have test equipment to test the older Motronic ECU's like the one for the E30 318i?

And if you do and find the fault, would you be able to tell what caused the fault in the first place?

Hey Gerbrandt,

Those are a little old to be honest. Ideally it's the kind of repair I need to diagnose while it's still in the car.

Over the years there must've been over 50 different kinds of ecu's used by BMW and having a jig for each one isn't practical. That being said, if you PM me a pic of the ecu and its part number, i would likely be able to get you a replacement. I came across a stash of very old and rare ecu's a few weeks back.
