BMW G05 X5 30dX - Major Brake Refresh

A few weeks ago, fellow Fanatics member @lebofa contacted me while he was overseas. He mentioned he’d be back home in SA around the 8th of August and wanted to bring in his stunning G05 X5 πŸš™πŸ’¨ for some brake work β€” rear discs, pads, sensor, and a brake fluid flush πŸ”§β€” and asked to book it for the 12th.

Yesterday he stopped by with all the parts in hand (rear discs, pads, sensor, and brake fluid). Funny enough, we live just three streets apart β€” convenient!
πŸ˜„

We started by adding protective covers to the driver’s seat, steering wheel, and footwell
πŸ›‘οΈ to keep everything spotless. The X5 went onto the lift, air suspension into Jack mode, and parking brake into service mode.

With the wheels off, we immediately spotted that the front pads were low
πŸ” β€” not yet triggering the sensor, but they would in a few weeks. While the car was here, he decided to get the front pads and sensor as well, so we could do the full job in one go. The front discs were still in great shape.

Rear brakes were stripped down completely β€” calipers, brackets, clips, bolts, dust shields β€” all removed, degreased, and cleaned until they were Brake dust free and looked brand new. Calipers, axles, and hubs got the same treatment.

Once the front pads and sensor arrived, we pulled those apart too, showing him the built-up brake dust before giving the calipers, clips, and pins a thorough clean.

Everything was reassembled with care:

  • Anti-squeal spray on the pads
  • New discs Cleaned with brake cleaner
  • Anti-seize paste on contact points
  • Thread locker on bolts
  • Rear brakes first, then fronts β€” all meticulously reinstalled πŸ› οΈ

We then flushed and bled all four corners with OEM BMW DOT 4 Fluid using the pressure bleeder, refitted the wheels, took the air suspension and parking brake out of service modes, cleared stored codes, and reset all brake service reminders
βœ….

By the time we wrapped up, it was 8 pm. I did a short test drive to confirm the brakes felt perfect and were starting to bed in.

This morning, He collected the X5, we ran through everything that was done and off he went, About an hour later I got this message:
"Thank you very much
😁 You did a great job here, no squeal and the brakes are great"

Another happy BMW Fanatic!
πŸ™Œ

@lebofa Thanks for trusting us with your beautiful BMW X5 β€” I’m glad I could assist. If you need anything, just shout β€” I’m literally walking distance away!

I can't help but notice you use alot of the cheap brand parts like brakes, fluids, filters ect on the cars you service. Are you recommending the cheap stuff or is it just a case of the owners can't afford original parts or supply you cheap stuff to install?

1. In this case the owner supplied his own parts as i mentioned above. TRW are the original Manufacturer of the Brakes on this Vehicle so the front and rear TRW Pads he supplied are infact OEM quality, Just at a more affordable price since they dont have the BMW Stamp and agents Mark up on them.

2. In most cases, People choose Aftermarket over Agent Parts due to cost factors.

3. Aftermarket Manufacturers make the Parts for BMW, MERC, FORD ETC. Like for instance Mann Filters & MAHLE make the the OEM OIL and Fuel Filters for BMW, Merc, ford.ect so they are the same filter & quality at a more affordable price.

BMW dont have Factories that produce Brakes, Filters, Sensors, Transmissions.etc Its all made by other Aftermarket manufacturers with BMW stamps on them.

Anyways at the end of the day, its the customers choice.

I should have pointed to the use of febi and motor euro parts, plus oem oil filters are cheap enough to stay with oem so I dont see a need to experiment with aftermarket oil filters. The motul is good stuff though.πŸ‘

A point of clarification:

OE and OEM parts are both high-quality components for vehicles, but they differ in branding. OE (Original Equipment) parts are made by the same manufacturer that supplied the original parts to the vehicle manufacturer (OEM) and are often branded with the vehicle manufacturer's logo. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are also made by the original manufacturer but are sold under the manufacturer's own brand name or through a distributor. Both types of parts are designed to meet the same quality and performance standards as the original parts installed in the vehicle.

Mahle, Lemforder, Bosch, Valeo, Wurth, Sonax, TRW, ZF and hundreds of other brands all manufacture parts for and on behalf of BMW and other German cars. Both Motul and Liqui Moly are BMW approved.

Even something simple like a battery charger is made by CTEK (but then branded by BMW with a markup).

Choosing not to pay extra for a BMW stamp/ print/engraving is a matter of personal preference.
But like most things on forums, this is something very divisive.
