hehehe interesting write up.
Each to his own, but let the F30 grow on you.
I think you're just missing the 335

Congrats on your F30

I find it tiring to hold the steering wheel at 9 & 3.

10 & 2 are perfect for comfort, control, and fatigue elimination.

Hey

I also recently received a new F30 320i for a courtesy vehicle. I was very impressed with the performance of the 320i and the auto box and that is it!

Agree that the car feels VERY cheap inside. We are a BMW family and I always loved the brand, but the latest BMW's does not impress me at all with regards to build quality.

Anyways, enjoy your new car mate! Give it 6 months, usually a car grows on me.

Cheers

Congrats on the F30 Bud

I think you're missing your 335.

Having an 325 E90 and now driving a 335, the 335 is more boring despite the extra power. It's too refined. It's too quiet, hence looking into the exhaust and PPK upgrade. I think interior quality is better. Exterior body is definitely softer.

For everyday driving it's great though

I had my E90 for 6 years and can't see holding onto the F30 for so long, although I don't think I'm going to get anything better for the same price.

I would miss the e90 335 so much if I went to a f30 d320, then again it's something new and different.

Reading everything about the f30 and your issues in the first post... are you sure you went over everything on the infinitely long options sheet

I moved from an E90 320d to the F30 330d and must say I drive now more sedately. I use eco pro way more than I use sport, but I think thats a good thing, tyres and fines will stack up to quickly.

Interior felt like a massive upgrade to me. Maybe because I had an older E90, but this feels a lot more solid now.

Flappy paddles I am not used to so I am reserving judgement until I have actually taught myself to use them more.

But go and drive in an E46 and suddenly you think...

If you gents don't like the position of the paddle shifts why don't you just order your car with a real gearbox. There is nothing nicer than snapping a BM and fighting the back wheels to keep the car straight.

Personally I think the e46 was the best 3 series made(build quality, looks, performance):fencelook:

With that said my experience on the F30's is the look and feel of the plastics are cheap the cup holders are a fail, I have forgotten the key at home(thought it was in one of my many pockets filled with things) and drove to the filling station around the corner and got stranded there when i couldnt get the car to start again, but that WAS my fault:fencelook::fishwack: so key less go takes some getting used to also.

Good points on the f30 are looks, auto gearbox, the baby model can now hold its own against run of the mill golf, and roomier interior

With regards to the steering feel, I only test drove the one F30 328i Sport that they had back at the launch, and maybe it's a case of having to drive it some more to get used to it, but the short time that I drove the car it did feel quite strand and maybe a bit too light, especially at speed. I felt less connected to the car from that point of view, but I reckon I would eventually get used to it. Getting back into my E90 I was immediately aware of how heavy the steering is especially at town driving speeds - then again, even the E46 has lighter steering than the E90.

The auto start/stop would irritate me though - especially on a diesel, it's just a waste of your starter motor, even on the petrols, I would rather decide when I want to turn the engine off. I remember at the launch, people would return after driving, and stop briefly, then whatever they did, the engine would shut-off and then almost immediately back on again! Also I cannot think that this is good for turbos, which all F30's have!

I also tend to prefer the older E46 in general. But, the F30 is impressive in its abilities, so won't say anything bad about it until I have experienced it properly for myself...

E46 was a solid built car. E90 I was not to impressed with. F30 was wow for handling and power and that magic 8spd auto. Got mine with 9000km on the clock and it already has 31 000km on currently. I definately going to keep it longer than my E90 I had

A brief update before the end of my first week in the car...
More niggles to be found...LOL:blab:

- Boot opening so nearly cost me new dentures for the GF it's not funny. Perhaps the tension on the boot springs are too high. It was funny for the moment...If it actually made contact it would have been a different story. Also makes the boot hard to shut.

- Climate control on the passenger side doesn't have a top (up arrow) setting. Only face and feet. My OCD makes this nigh impossible to live with cause the icons are different :)

- Can't get the launch control to kick in properly. The manual has a rather lengthy process to follow, but of the three attempts made I never got the checkered flag on the dash. I don't recall seeing the bit of needing an old priest and a young priest for this to work...

- Consumption is pretty cool, and the ECO mode shows in real-time how many added KM's you've gained by driving like your mum. I also see you can have custom profiles loaded for these via the USB. Just can't seem to figure out how to save a profile.

- Found paint runs on the bonnet and boot edges? Nothing hints of accidents, all the lines and other details are perfect. I know some people complained about shoddy paint on earlier models, maybe it was fixed by adding more paint?

Other than this, starting to like the car. It's quieter than the previous, and the chassis is a hell of a lot stiffer. The E90 used to squeak and moan over bumps and pavements...this has none of the flex.

I'll keep making updates through the next couple of weeks...Maybe I can find some redemption further down the line... Like having more money for toys or a social life. Maybe even a Fanatics meet in Fourways?

Yes you can see the difference in Paint finishing. I wont say its bad paint its just the rounding off is not as neat as it was where it concerns concealed areas compared to the e46 era. I can assume the coat is also thinner than the e46 era. Even the seems where they put sealer or bonding is not as neat as it was before and I think it's all down to cheap labor and cost saving. Look its not that bad its better than most other Auto Makers in the market. One thing of BMW is that there panel gaps and so on are always perfect and even.

Yes the Onboard computer screen takes getting use to if you never had something like this in your previous car, but once you play around with it you will get the hang of it quickly.

I was also confused with the air-con system especially the FAN setting. If you in auto mode with the aircon why can you adjust the Fan speed? is it not supose to adjust itself like on older model BMW's? Then I noticed it seems to me that you actually set a specific range for the FAN speed to operate to correct the temp imbalance in the car that you selected, and the aircon will regulate the FAN speed in that range, not like the older models when you get in the car and its hot and you turn it on then it blows you out the car. I keep Mine selected in the middle in Auto mode and it regulates the fan speed in that range. Maybe someone else can shed more light on the Auto function related to Fan speed.

Yes I also see now you cant select top window vent only. Looks like they reserved that for Defrost mode.

the dealer can code the stop/start to "last mode"

Anybody had this done at a dealer on this Forum

Nice post.

On my 320d (2012) the auto stop annoys the heck out of me.
Even more so when you have cancelled it and it reverts back to auto as soon as you go back to eco mode from comfort or sport whilst in the same trip.
It took me a long time(embarrassed to say how long) to realize this. I always thought that it was on a timer and reverted back to auto after a certain time !
cant believe that the saving in fuel will be more the the repair or replacement cost of a failed starter motor from all the starting if you intend to keep the car for a while.

Also struggling with the speed or noise sensitive radio volume which suddenly changes volume up and down for no reason. It has settings but you can not disable it all together.

cheers and good luck with the car
