BMW E90 smoke from exhaust

Just on the point of can it be done without removing the cylinder head. Well this is how mine was done in December 2010 and my car is still going strong with no smoke and no oil consumption. Your mach I believe needs to know what he's doing though.

I believe he does cause he worked for BMW till he retired and i doubt he'd gain anything from lying about the job.
He said he would need special tools to do the job without removing the cylinder head.
Would like to actually know how its done

Hey Gents! Still have to do valve stem seals on our 2004 120i too.

The only reason why the cylinder head has to be removed, is for the mech to be able to compress the valve springs with a huge G-clamp like tool, which fits right over the cylinder head when in the work bench. Remove springs, get to the small rubber seals, clean/lap valves, replace seals, put all back together again.

With the 'special tool', it enables the mech to compress those springs on the cylinder head where it sits on the engine, without having to remove the head, but the tool must be right in order to make it work. (that spring tention is not to play with!) There will be no cleaning/lapping valves then. Also not always necessary in each case.

The valves can be set & cleaned when the head is off while his at it. Makes everything seal 100% again for that true combustion = performance. :=):

That's a rough explanation of the process, either way, it's a lot of labour time to do it! That's why so expensive to have it done.

Hope that helps with the 'how it's done' stuff. :fencelook:

hi guys need help with BMW 320i E90,
car has 120k mileage, blueish smoke from exhaust when pulling off, excessive oil consumption, had the oil seperator replaced buy dealer after diagnosis, one week later the car has started to consume oil and smokin again. can a vacuum oil pump failure lead to this?

Hi Airbon, the vacuum pump can cause oil consumption if leaking, the engine oil in which it's running will leak externally, possibly onto the exhaust causing smoke under the bonnet/hood! That was the case with our vehicle. But it's got nothing to do with the blue smoke from the exhaust what so ever.

That's should be caused from the valve stem seals yes.

I am new to this Forum and would also like to enquire on this.

Bought my E90 a week ago, 2006 320i with only 74,000km's on.
As my luck would have it, 4 days after I got it I've noticed the smoke.
Happened three times and it was gone.
Luckily it's still under motorplan and took it back to SMG.
This was yesterday and when I spoke to them earlier they said the job will be done around 17h00. Wasn't necessary to remove the head, but they replaced the valve stem seals and some breather pipes which was soft and blocked.

Does this mean that the vehicle will have better performance and fuel consumption? 'Caused it felt kinda dead on pull away in first and second.
First time beemer driver and what a way to pop the cherry.

seems as a common issue upon arrival of your e90 -
i had my 320i e90 2days and the same thing - Valve stems
cost around R7500 but atleast it was fixed . the smoke was not affecting performance but merely irritating and would only get worse if i had left it

so to answer your question . . . no
no better consumption and no better performance

BTW - since your new . please intro yourself under the intro area and post some pics of your ride

many happy miles

Now it sometimes shake and sounding like exhaust is blocked with less power being bit loud. could it be maybe they didnt change the breather pipes talked about here????.........:fencelook:

Could be valve stem seals. Will need to open her up to make sure though.

I most definately think it might be the oil seals.my moms 2008 320i also consumed excessive oil!We bought her the car a bout 5 mths ago and since then its been using about a 500ml/1000ml bottle of oil EVERY MONTH.and my mom only drives about 1000km/month!!

The day before contacting tne dealers about this I got a sms from BMW saying
"Is your car smoking or using oil -02 onwards?"
Took the car in and was told the valve seals was replaced.
Now im monitoring the oil consumption to see if it makes a difference. Its only been a week so i cant elaborate on this yet.

Btw, the car never smoked!

Luckily the car is still under m/plan so it was done free of charge, but i dont think its an expensive job to do.

Go have it checked out!

Hope this helps:rollsmile:

only now did i notice you have been sorted out already!:fencelook:

:sorry:

during my apprenticeship years and post trade test days, there was an old "rule-of-thumb"

and I wonder if this still holds true on todays engines, although it should as basic 4 stroke engines essentially haven't changed since...umm

If it smokes under power/acceleration - rings
If it smokes under deceleration/against engine compression - valve stem seals

does this still hold true ?

Hi Guys,

Anyone know where I can get this done at a reasonable price around Vaal, Vanderbijl/Vereeniging/Meyerton/Sasolburg preferably?

Please help :argh::cry:

hey guys, update on the post, turns out the smoke was caused by worn out valve stem seals...the seals are made of rubber and they had actually hardened and were letting oil sip through...the seal replacement kit from the dealership cost R655 and labour quoted at R6500:thumbdo:!! fortunatley i found a mechanic who specialises in all beemer repairs, who quoted R3000:thumbs:!! the repair required removal of the entire cylinder head, replacing the valves and resetting the valves, the job took 3and a half days to complete, and she is running SUPER CLEAN:joy:

Hi AirBON,

Where is your mechy based? He seems reasonable enough... :bravo: I'm based in Vanderbijl and I'm hoping I can get someone close by who charges as reasonably as your guy...

Please pm me his details
