Personally i wouldn't touch a car with a bearing knock
I stand corrected in saying that it will require a new engine to fix - this is what we done on my brothers car(Opel) when he had a bearing knock

Also if you set on a e90 in that price range you can have a look at this one: https://www.cars.co.za/for-sale/used/2008-BMW-M3-SEDAN-MANUAL-FSH-Gauteng-Benoni/3540922/

if you looking for a e46 heres an example: https://www.cars.co.za/for-sale/used/2006-BMW-M3-e46-Gauteng-Westonaria/3487728/

Hope this helps

Thank you for your advice. I will look at the two options you provided.

Unless you have the time, money and resources to deal with this car I say walk away.. it can turn into a money pit fairly quick with other mechanical parts failing

I think that car looks neat. Get a worst case scenario quote for engine fix and use that as a bargaining tool .
The seller must be realistic in that the car is a unknown.
On the other hand, all those car produce a knock eventually. So buying a good one may be short lived.
Besides the other 2 above look seriously tired compared to this one.

I have budget for maintenance not major repairs, I think safe option is to walk away

It does look tempting but I think he's asking too much, may just walk away.

If thats the case, rather buy a E46 :smilebounce:

Asking prices on E46 is too much and some of them look tired and also subframe issues has been holding me back

It's a bearing knock, the car doesn't have syphilis.

And in any event bearings are, according to some, maintenance items on these cars so you (or anyone else) would/should budget accordingly.

Worst case, you might need a new crank.

It's all speculation until it's in pieces and a decent machine shop can give you an opinion so if you are serious, make a few calls.

I certainly wouldn't pass on a potentially good car without doing my homework first.

225k for car

60-90k worse case scenario to fix/replace motor including labour

285- 315k for running car besides for what other mechanical issues you might find on the way, iv seen e90 m3s sell lately for 08 models around the 300-320k mark some of them with bearings already replaced as maintenance measures

"I know what the vehicle is worth so please don’t offer ridiculous sums, these will be ignored. "

One needs to be full of oneself to make that statement given the car that is being sold.

New crank is R40k
A gasket set is R25k.
Once those engines knock the crank gets bent and the conrod needs to be changed.
Sometimes the crank saddles in the block get damaged and there is no way to fix them.

A secondhand engine is R130k

Walk away and let him keep his problem.
