BMW e90 engine noise - video

Just for the record - this is a straight 6 petrol engine, not a diesel :rollsmile:

jokes aside now... how about some more detail as to how and when it started. also, when was the last time you did an oil service and what oil did you use?

Slamz - I took ownership on 25 August.
The trouble started when a pully bolt broke on the crankshaft...(31 August)
That was replaced.

After that (4 Oct) , I complained about the rpm fluctuating (and BTW it still does):

and all of the following were ( apparently ) replaced under Motor Plan:

Tapped cover gasket + new Aluminium screws
Outlet camshaft Adjustment unit
Impulse sending wheel
Inlet camshaft Adjustment unit

Collar screws x2 (for the Adjustment units)

2x solonoid valves (it goes into the head)

2x camshaft position sensors

I am not convinced today that it is fixed.

After some fuel line / injector cleaner was chased through the motor with some rather hard driving, the car has a much smoother accelleration and response to the throttle than before. So it is definetely better after that, but the noise is still there with irratic idling at times.

Aparrently the car was serviced just before I bought it. Oil are changed by the BMW dealership. It says I can still drive 26000km before it needs to be serviced again. Not to sure what type of oil the DS uses.

It is most likely the valve lifters.

It's hard to say, to me it sounds similar to mine, just maybe a bit noisy because of the video and how close it was to the engine at times. Nothing beats having another similar car to compare with side by side. I took some vids some time ago too, but not very good quality so will have to take them again on my newer camera. Just uploaded the one, will add the rest a bit later on...

This is with the engine up to normal operating temperature after arriving home.

Mine is also upon arrival home. But mine sounds more like a diesel than yours.
Not nailing the diesels here :rollsmile: but I expected a far less noisy motor. :nonono:

Frikkie, its time you install a sound system with a subwoofer and everything.
That way, you dont hear the funny noises that make you worry, and you drive the car until a warning light comes on. :rollsmile:

Tell you what - I promised I will upload this beautiful noise video - hence this thread.
I will book it for the repair and if it is not better, leave it at BMW until it is fixed, whilst driving their courtesy car.
If we don't come right then, the sound system is a viable option and I expected too much from the e90 BMW.
I obviously hear noises others don't - ask LZ :rollsmile:

Thing is, on some of the other vids that I have seen relating to the metal ticking noise, it is quite a bit louder! The one vid it really does sound like a cold diesel idling, the other one the ticking is so loud that the microphone distorts. How noticeable is the noise when the bonnet is closed?

After you broke a crank bolt... how do you just "break a crank bolt"

I don't know if your camera is just very sensitive to higher frequencies compared to my old Nikon for that matter which makes the mechanical noises seem a lot louder. I would say try and meet up with another forum member with a similar or same E90 and compare.

If the noise is noticeably louder compared to the similar car I would insist that motorplan sort this out!!

Now last video, from inside my car idling but with the bonnet still open - engine revs are constant until shut down of course...

Actually, I'd hope even a modern diesel wouldn't be very noisy...

at what mileage was the last oils service done? try changing the oil and use slx or magnatec professional...i had a simlar sound when my oil change was due, changed the oil and voila... sound gone...

Worth a try, but I doubt that it's the oil causing this noise - seems to be a known problem with some of these engines and some are affected while others aren't to a lesser degree.
