Depends which model you are going for? Petrol or Diesel.
Also your daily commute, are you sitting in heavy traffic daily?

I personally went for a manual as I prefer the interaction and control you have with the vehicle, even though its a diesel ie. 320d. I enjoy it as I don't sit in start stop traffic a lot.

Also, have heard of quite a few issues with the e90 auto boxes as they age and have not been properly maintained. As well as electronic issues.

A manual box will require a clutch and dual mass flywheel change at some point so you will need to budget for that.

Auto cars hold more value than manuals and are more sought after and easier to sell. As long as you do the gearbox service you should be fine. They rarely trouble or fail. There is however no substitute for a proper drivers car with a manual gearbox when you want to be in total control but thats 10% of the time. Auto boxes have come a long way. Modern autos are lighter on fuel and quicker shifting than even the best drivers. Diesels are better and easier in auto as well due to the low revving nature. Personally, I'd go for an auto and take it to ZF for the service.
