Bmw E90 325i overheating

Hi.
Have a 2005 525i bmw, it has an E90 325i engine in it.
I have been experiencing overheating problems. While travelling on the freeway the Orange temperature light flashes. I was scared to pull over because of the area. Then the red temperature light flashed and car started stalling. I changed the water pump and not the thermostat, someone advised us to drill a hole in the thermostat. Car was fine for a few days and started showing me the temperature sign again, only this time the car isn't stalling . Checked the water bottle if it's hot a bubbling as a sign of overheating, nothing. Hot air is not blowing out while fan is coming on. Only one pipe is getting hot and the other is Cold.
Please assist.
Thank you.

Hi there. Seem's like you dealing with a nightmare. It could be possible that on your first overheating ordeal where the car was driven until it stalled resulted in the head gasket being blown.
Did you have the oil and coolant checked for contamination?

Hope you find a solution...

uhmmmm Nope, the car would have started and allowed the OP to drive, he will diffidently started hearing engine noise now, the stalling is a self program emergency system, OP you said that the thermostat was not replaced. i would have this checked and replaced, and have someone read your error codes it bringing up.

When you replaced the waterpump, did you just add water into the radiator till it was full and then went on from there, or did you "bleed" the system to ensure there is no air trapped inside the system?

The proper method is too first, not drill a hole in the thermostat (cause your car runs on different temperature to ensure efficiency, you destroyed this)(http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1079189) (Figure 8, http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec...tem/WATER-Draining_Filling_Cooling_System.htm) and secondly switch the ignition on till all light show and hold down the petrol pedal all the way to the floor for 10sec, you will hear the waterpump kick in and water should start flowing, leave this for 10 minutes and recheck the water level in the radiator. REMEMBER to do a 50/50 dilution of antifreeze and water, these motors will know if it isnt

Please fire the friend or someone who told you to drill the hole and not listen to that person again.

Hot and cold water pipes means the water is not circulating, so either your hole is not working or your water pump is pumping air...

OK.
That could be alot of issues....
I changed the water pump and bleed the system also using antifreeze. (As per Fuzz 123).Going to change the thermostat, is there a difference whether i get a metal or plastic thermostat?
Water pump is kicking in but , i feel that the signal is sent too late to the fan and radiator , that is why the temperature light varies from orange to red to orange again. Also thought it could be the thermoswitch.
Have not thought of head gasket being blown, have checked the oil cap for any water and oil mixing ,nothing... however doesn't hurt to double check oil and coolant for contamination.

Thanks.
