BMW E90 325i fuel pump overtemperature?

Hi guys,

This is my first forum post so please forgive if I'm posting in the wrong place or something.

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on a problem I'm experiencing with my 2005 325i E90 147 000kms on the clock.

The car is intermittently stalling(days and weeks apart mostly), usually in the morning following a "quickish" highway drive home the previous night, the iDrive comes up with a fuel pump fault get it checked out warning but I'm able to start the car again straight away. The car idling seems to also few and far apart drop to the point where it almost dies then jumps back up. Need to also mention the car seems to usually die when gently accelerating after slowing down for a bump or just trying to pull away, this morning for the first time it died following the rough idle.

I had the fuel pump replaced 3 days ago by the garage at my dealer and had the same problem this morning, i've plugged my diagnostic cable in and according to the INPA logs the fuel pump is overheating in the engine logs, and the fuel pump log complains about an implausible signal or value.

Would greatly appreciate any advice on this, the car is booked to see bmw in a week but I'm worried that the problem is too intermittent and subtle to diagnose, are there any quick fixes such spark plugs etc that would be worth while trying in the meantime?

Please let me know if you need more details.

Thanks!

Sounds like a wiring problem. Does the car only have one fuel pump?

Hi P1000,

Yes only one, no HPFP.

That does make sense, clearly the fuel pump isn't really overheating, the car for some reason thinks so, so wiring, software, possibly a faulty sensor?

My confusion is that its never happened on a highway or basically over 1500rpm which leads me to suspect something in the fuel supply?

It sounds like you need a vanos pump,I had mine replaced about 4months ago,it cost R3500 from the agents.Does the car feel underpowered? My car had similar issues with regards to the erratic idling.

Hi Fayz,

Thanks for the reply, where there any specific diagnostic errors logged in your case?

Its hard to say, my car does feel underpowered on low rpms when accelerating away from a speed bump with the auto in 2nd i'm assuming, and I do occasionally feel a slight stutter from the engine on low rpms. When driving and pulling away with a heavier foot the car seems fine.

That definitely sounds like vanos pump.Zeemax diagnosed the problem with their diagnostic machine and the symptoms that the car is displaying was very similar to what my car had. After the pump was replaced the car had way more power from low revs.

Hi Guys,

So i've had my fuel pump replaced following the fuel pump overheating errors logged, didn't solve the problem.

The car is now at bmw who recon the fuel pump control unit needs to be replaced and is getting overheated by the fuel pump drawing too much current, which I guess does make sense, what seems weird is that the fuel pump in there is a week old and having the same problem.

Does anyone happen to know what the current consumption on these pumps should be (N52 motor), using INPA i've seen mine is about 10 Amps.

My next worry is that the fuel pump is actually struggling due to a clogged fuel filter, unfortunately these are a bit pricey to just replace.

My control unit should arrive next week, will give an update incase anyone else runs into this problem.

Please can someone help me.

I have an e90 320i. When I purchased the car it didn't have the original DME box so I found and replaced as the car would start but pick up rev counts. After that the car was driving fine, did a long road trip and suddenly the next day the car didn't want to start. Replaced the fuel and and fuel gauge and now the car starts but when you hit the gas it cuts out. Has anyone experienced this problem or knows what to do? These are the error codes that pop up:

2865 - variable valve gear voltage supply sensor bank 1
2870 - Output stage HPFI10 line 10
