6 is incredibly high for open road and a manual 6 speed. I was getting 3.8 on my 330d at 100kmph cruising speed. 120 around 4.5.

The trip computer shows some 1.4 l/100km lower then actual distance travelled on the fuel tank calcualtion.

Not always... I find the Trip Computer is fairly accurate on my E39

I also find the trip computer is more frugal than actual per tank calculations. Varies from 0.5-1.0L/100km that the OBC under reads.

Thats what I am.getting based on the calculation. I cannot adjust the factor applied as with the e36 its a simple task. The e46 is locked .

I went down to Harrismith Sterkfontein this week and i got 5.6 l/100km avg 130kph with aircon on. not sure if this is decent consumption. thought i would get at least 5,2.

my first long road trip and man i love how the car handled on the open road.

I'm getting similar OBD results but will post what I actually get per tank. How I compare my cars is using similar test conditions ie:

1. I fill up all the cars to the first click only.

2. I do the same amount of trips to work and back (same road from home via highways)

3. The only major variable is driving style so on the highway I always use 130kmh cruise control for this experiment (and limit the town driving hooning)

4. I see how many actual km's I get until the reserve light comes on and then fill up.

5. Compare actual mileage between the cars

It's by no means very accurate but it gives me a good indication of how the cars differ from one another. I'm busy with my E90 320d doing this experiment and I'm curious to see if it will beat the E46 330d (place your bets!)

I got 830 kms before filling up this morning. Still had 70k left on trip computer. I filled up about R800 of fuel.

Coming from VAG cars, I found that I can influence the trip consumption a lot just by coasting in neutral on downhills. Who here has tried coasting and checked if it makes any difference. It would be interesting to see how the ECU calculates the consumption. On the PD diesel motors in the VAG cars, the ECU has an algorithm that uses injection quantity, rpm, speed, time and distance, and if I remember correctly it also has some form of dampening factor to keep things a bit more stable.

I also get 8 - 8.5 L per 100 kms in town. E90 320d Auto with 18's.
This is in heavy traffic (bumper to bumper) for 30kms a day.
If I get onto the highway it drops to 5.5 to 6 L. But I have a heavy foot and every other week or so I get 9.5 - 10 L.

Still its way better than a 323i or 325i.

Granted, my car is also chipped with a throttle interceptor. This actually does make the car more fuel efficient if the right driving style is applied.

You can say that again...323i is way too thirsty...regret not getting a diesel..

Hi,

Two weeks ago myself and the misses took a trip down to Port Edward and back (I am in Secunda) with my 2011, e90, 320D with 151000km on the clock. Boot was fully loaded.

Total kilometres travelled: 1502km,
Consumption: 18.5 km/l,
Average Speed: 101km/h,

Hope this helps,

Cheers

From experience i can tell you diesel cars do not like short distances, also you will notice the fuel consumption drops once car is up to temp. My consumption is in high 12's for the first 5 kms of morning commute and evens out to around low 7's at the end of my trip (30kms) mixed traffic conditions travelling to cpt cbd

Mine is also heavy in town.

My wife drive it to work every day. She drives in town only and Kuruman does not really have traffic. She drives about 8km to work. Sitting on 9.5-10.5l/100km. It's 2011 e90 Lci auto with 17". I thought it's normal but looking at some of the consumption you guys get, that's quite heavy. Car is stook. I drove the car for around 150km just to get millage on the clock as it said 250km on half a tank. Sitting on 1/4 now and says when have driven 450km's.

Ai

My 2011 330d Auto generally sits on 8L/100km when I'm doing a lot of city driving.

Open road sits on 5.5L/100km doing 140km/h. 6.4L/100km if I'm doing 180km/h.

Stock standard. Downpipe and remap coming soon!

EDIT: I've noticed Diesels don't like short trips. I always let my car idle for 5 - 10min before driving somewhere and cool down for a few minutes before I switch off.

Diesels just dont do well in stop start driving. On the open road my 530d will sit around 5.5-6l/100km but in town I commute from Hyde Park to Lanseria every day and I sit at 8-9l/100. I still really cant complain as thats actually pretty good performance from a big 1.5 ton car with a 3 liter lump up front

What he said...............you car does not fit your requirements. Stop to stop OR very short distances - Petrol is the winner

Definitely something wrong there, my 2012 LCi E90 auto, did the school run and to work and back home(10km per day, roundtrip), no traffic and no highways and on a bad tank(read: hoonigan driving) i'd get nothing less than 400km on half a tank and 600km by the time it hits quarter(don't let my cars go below this). Avg was between 7.0 - 7.5 L/100km

my e90 LCI, all 97% urban driving:

before remap 8.2 L/100km
after remap 8.0 L/100km

long distance mixed driving 4.6 L/100km

i found with my the secret is to get it into 4th gear (if speed allows) for best consumption in traffic.

sto and go will yield around 8 average
