Hey Guys

The on board computer stating that front brakes need to be replaced.
After checking i see the pads are worn and the disc has a bit of a lip.

I just got a quote of R2480
this is for new pads, sensors and skimming of the brake discs.

now my questions are:

is this a reasonable price?
should i skim the discs, or rather just buy new discs?
what brand are the oem pads?
what should the pads cost?
what should the discs cost?
best place in Joburg to purchase them

I would rather get new discs if you feel that the braking power is fading. The thinner they disc get the prone they will be to warping.

Try Goldwgen, Midas and Star Brake and Clutch for prices.

this seems quite reasonable, although you don't state what brand of pads will be fitted?

I Paid...iirc
Front disks - R1350 (Meyle from Goldwagen)
Front pads - R700 (Febi from Goldwagen)
Sensor - R70
Fitment was DIY... Its quite easy. I think the oem pads are texstar. I dont track my car so the meyle/febi combo works perfectly on the 320d. New discs got rid of the annoying shudder when braking hard so i would recommend it.

I Also find Tune Tech Ridiculously expensive for a non dealer,
John at Leo Hasse Quoted me R7900 and a 2 day repair time for Valve stem seals on my old 120i , while Shaun at Tune tech quoted me R16,500 and a repair time of +/- 2 weeks for the same thing.
for that reason, I will never go back there

Yup, Bmw Leo Haese came in at R800 cheaper than Tune Tech for Pads and Discs :clapper:

they also were R1000 more than Bmw to supply and fit my belt and pulley.

I am sure their service muts be good as they have an excellent reputation, but dam do you pay for that service! it saddens me as i live 100 meters from Tune Tech.

I paid just under R1500 for Decelera (think it's spelt something like that) discs , pads and front sensor.
Now if anyone know me and diy, I tend to brake things.
And managed to brake the sensor so I had to get another one.
This DIY took me just under 2 hours to do......this because the brakes were moer hot when I started working on it.
PS.
Bought the parts from Midas in Rand burg. The one close to the builders express

I have anti squeal paste made by ATE, a friend purchase dit when he wanted me to assist him with changing his brakes, cost about R200 odd for a small tube.

I can confirm that my vw with new Ferodo pads ( fitted by previous owner) used to squeal like it was metal to metal when cold , even warm. It would only be quiet at the end of a drive. I asked Bosch to sort it out when they serviced the vehicle and was told they everything they could, and there was no change.

When i stripped the front brakes myself i found that it was completely dry with no form paste inbetween. I used the paste and the brakes are completely and utterly quiet, been like that for well over 6 months now with no signs of deterioration. I will take a pic and post here this evening.

If it gives you any confidence, Im attempting to change the rear brakes on my 320d this weekend.

Knowledge is power, just watch as many DIY videos as possible to make you feel more comfortable.

There are loads and load of video's available: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=e90+brake+pad+replacement

I did my front discs and pads about a month ago. The hardest part was jacking the car up as the trolley jack is too high to get under the car.
Once you get passed that, its calipers off (2 bolts) then pads off then guide screw for discs and discs off. I've done about 4 diys so far, 3 cosmetic with the brakes being the only mechanical one and the brake diy was by far the easiest.

Reviving thread:

Over the weekend I attempted this DIY, and I thought Id share some feedback:

I watched a few YouTube tutorials, in the end I found this video to be the most informative:

Tools needed: Apart from a jack and a tire iron, you will need a few basic tools like a Flathead screw driver, and the Hex toolbit to fit your socket wrench to undo the 2 screws holding the pads.

The actual job took me about 2 hours from start to finish. I also replaced the brake pad sensor, which was a little tricky. If I had to do this job again, I rate I can do it in half the time.

In terms of technicality this is not a hard DIY, if you have the right tools. I had the correct tools, so Id rate it a 6/10

I serviced my car today at Ross Duncan Auto Services and they informed me my front pads will need replacing soon. Apparently I have two weeks left, but I declined and told them I would come back to them.

I checked the wear and there is at least 3-4mm left on the pads, not sure how much should be left before it hits the sensor?

Also I asked what pads they use and he said they only use BMW for the front because other makes tend to be noisy/screechy etc. Not sure if this is always the case?

They are asking R2400 for fronts which is a lot money.

R2400 is a bit of money, but I wouldnt say it's unreasonable. It's a business after all.

If you are not comfortable paying that much, DIY!
