Hi Fanatics

Are the Gm 5 Modules interchangeable between the e46 models.?

Can i take a donor E46 any model and use it on my Car.

what needs to be change afterwards.? key reprogramming etc etc

Cause my central locking are giving me more problems by the day, just unlocking my door only. I even struggle getting the others open from inside.

Thanks

I would like to know the answer to this too as my GM5 module also gives issues from time to time.

There's a place in Bellville called Combined Electronics that fixes the GM5 modules.

If the doors sometimes don't open from the inside (stuck in lock position), then I find pressing the lock/unlock button seems to clear it, and the doors will open again.

I got a used one to replace mine. It worked but I had to code in touring specific stuff, like tailgate locking etc.

This was for an e39, which might use a gm3 instead of gm5 module.

Try to find one from a similar car as yours, at least in features:
- Same amount of doors with electronic locks (yes there were non-electric locks on base 316i ect
- Same amount of airbags (they changed from pre-fl to fl)
- Same amount electronic windows, some cars had manual back, or like coupe/sedan+touring is different

Coding is needed if those are not the same. I can not say for certain if the coupe has enough relays in the GM5 for sedan/touring cars. So at the very least get one from a sedan, and preferably if you have a FL, get one from a FL donor.

Grabbed the following images from the net to give you an idea of what settings/coding can be done:

I didn't know a Gm 3 module from a E39 can also works. maybe needs to read up a bit more.

Yes i also sent a mail to Combined electronics but they either do not read they mails or the details on the web is not correct. our local electronics guys are a bit wary to replace the 2 relays although i explained to him that there is a step by step guide how to do this.

Thanks Guys

I thought you are in the NC? If you do go second hand GM5 route, I can always assist you with the coding for free if you visit Cape Town Northern Suburbs. Just bring the current and acquired GM5 modules and we can match the current coding, and/or make changes if you want.

Dont think the GM3 will work for you. They look similar but different:

You can also send this video to your local electronics guy:

Literally he can't go wrong after watching that.

Hmm I'm thinking mine has gone bad as well, if i disconnect and reconnect the battery, the auto lock when driving off works fine until the car is switched off and on again, then they just stay open.

Also sometimes when I press the lock button once, the sunroof will close from tilt position (and the windows if they are open).

Yeah I didn't mean they interchangeable, just that a 2nd hand one could work and I only needed to code the touring specific stuff as it came from a sedan. Everything else worked fine after plugging in without coding.
