hi all
Im new to this site please help.

While driving the car started to cut out for a split second. While cutting out the battery light came on. Then the car started to cut out for longer periods, up to 2-3 minutes and when turning the key no RPM while engin is turning over.

I took it to the auto electrician for a scan. The alarms that came up was
* crankshaft sensor
* camshaft sensor
*something like crankshaft exhaust sensor
* something like camshaft intake sensor or something like that

I tested the altinator, it was on 14 volts output. Tested the battery its 100%. The auto electritians told me it was the catalitical convertor thats blocked or the petrol pump.

I tested the fuel pump its working fine. The fuse and relay is fine but when turning the key no power to the fuel pump and no spark.

Took it to a machanic that told me replace the crankshaft sensor, so I did R1600 later and still not starting.

After replacing the crankshaft sensor we tried to start the car and did not want to start.......again. Got the auto electritian to do a scan again same person............ now the computer is not picking up the ECU.

Then the auto electrician saw that the temp gauge on the dash is in the red when trying to start the car and the car did not run it was standing for a week.

so please I beg of you what can I do or check now.

Sounds like you had a bad connection somewhere, causing arcing and voltage spikes, which confused the computer box, but I'm no expert. Good luck, hope you come right soon.

I'm sure mr Gizmo will see this post, he is a god when assessing these issues and his feedback will point you in the right direction.

Did you replace the crank sensor with an OEM sensor? The coolant sensor may cause a No start issue. Also try to disconnect the battery and after that clean the DME/ECU connectors and fit everything starting with DME and battery and try to start it. I wish you all the best Bud

That's likely a short in the loom. A short to earth in the temp. sensor circuit gives a false full hot signal, computer shuts down due to overheat. Track the wires back a bit, check for cracks in insulation, etc. Should show on an OBD scan though. Otherwise, security system all good? :fencelook:

+1 get a good auto electrician with BMW knowledge, cause there's plenty of wires and some auto electrician might run away LOL

+1 on the ground issue

Ask the guys what they are diagnosing with, if its not with BMW INPA or BMW GT1 aka DIS, walk away.

I have had a similiar issue before on an N42, also no start and it was bitching about a DME EWS sync, eventually figured out that it was a dead coil, which is a common failure point of there motors.

Its clear that the temp sender unit error cannot be related to the non start, hence the assumption that it must be a ground issue.

guys abit of hijacking nw, bt im stuck, i had not started my car for a week, and today when i try it just cranks but wont start, its not a batter issue as the battery is reading 13.8v ,there is this one part just below the airbox that looks like a electric window motor, bmw e46 325i

also been having a similar problem with my 2003 318i, if i switch of the car and have my radio on for example while im filling petrol, the car doesnt want to start, when i checked the battery level it was fine so dont know whats causing it to do that, also my cigarette lighter doesnt work,, not sure is its a fuse problem, has anyone had this problem before?

Had a silimiar problem with my 318i, temp gauge in the red, re-seated temp lug plug and then all was fine, has all the faults been cleared after the diagnostic.

Hi guys

Im new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone could help :fencelook:

I have a 2003 318i Wagon, initially when I got it the car wouldnt start and temp gauge shot straight into the red without the car even running.
I replaced coil packs and car started right up and runs but temp gauge still in the red whether car has been driven or not.
I have rplaced the following:

Temp sensor on the head
Temp sensor on radiator hose
Thermostat
DME relay.

I have tested the following :
Sensor wires for earthing and continuity
ECU tested by 2 companies, one says its fried the other says its fine.

I had a Launch pro diagnostic machine on it and it pulled 3 codes

2850 Variable gear guide sensor
27C3 Thermal oil level sensor
278B Temperature sensor, engine coolant

I managed to find a mate with the same year and model BMW which was starting and running and we swapped my ecu to his car. Temp gauge went straight to red. I put his ECU in my car and temp gauge went straight to red.
When we put his ECU back in his car the temp gauge is now in the red.

Have I blown his ECU as well or is there something I'm missing ?

would really appreciate any assistance
