Can you do a "chip" on the vehicle

You can chip an uno if you want...

Nowadays people do software instead of chips...

Safer as its just a modified program on existing ecu... instead of physically installing chip etc..

But seriously, why do software/chip on a normally aspirated engine without any other modifications, like cams and proper exhaust manifolds?

Don't waste your money on modifying a low numbers vehicle. Rather keep it stock and original and it will fetch you good money one day if you ever decide to sell. Collectors look for these 540i/6spd models in clean and original condition. If you want a faster v8/6spd then buy an M5.
