There is no big diference they share almost everything.
I have a very soft spot for the E38 it's just like a E39 with LOTS of really usefull little cubbyholes everywhere and more buttons and lights to play with than the space shuttle.
If ever there was a car that could float down the highway in utter luxury like a good yanktank and handle like a hot hatch down de Waal drive as well it's the 740i E38 with that EDCIII suspension.
E38 is a real sleeper in terms of how incredibly capable it is for it's size

Just remember folks, although they are not seen as such in SA, the 7 series is BMW's flagship car... its twice the car (and not just in size) of a 3 series....
Drive one, you will understand, I will buy another 7 series (already fully depreciated though) in a heartbeat, watch this space
