BMW E30/E36?

I've got a friend looking for a cheap car... He's quite keen on an E30 or maybe an E36.

He is not too phased by cosmetics as long as it is not in bad shape and the main concern would be how it runs. The focus is on getting something that runs well as a priority over something that looks good but needs work on the engine for example.

How reliable are these older BMWs? I've heard many good things about the E36 but don't know much about the E30s.

Are they expensive to maintain? Basic things will be done by him and I with more hectic stuff needing to be sorted by a mechanic.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, E30 are targeted by thiefs.

What's his budget?
Yes that does seem to be a bit of an issue... R35k hence why he isn't looking for a cosmetically immaculate model. Just something that will be fairly reliable

Ideally , I would suggest an E30 because its so easy to work on and repair , But because of the high risk of theft , I would suggest an E36 .
