Bmw Choice, please provide an opinion

Fellow Fanatics, I have been tasked with finding my cousin a new car for around R140000. She is currently driving a very problematic Tazz and is looking for hassle free motoring.

Whatever the choice is, it is going to be my responsibility should there be any issues, so it is imperative that the decision is a sound one.

I was thinking of the E87 1 series.

The E46 and E90 might be too big for her. Nothing performance orientated as well.

So tell me, is the 1 series feasible?

What should I look out for?

Any help is appreciated.

Hey Yuben, assume your cousin is a single female. Does it have to be a bmw that she wants? You are going to find it tough finding one with lowish mileage, not older than 5 years and motorplan in place for her budget.

Not sure on her exact needs and situation when it would come to repairs and maintenance, would she have someone to assist her.

If she is not stuck on the bmw, there are quite a few stylish/smart choices from other manufacturers that would allow her to get a much newer car with lower mileage. Kia Rio, VW Polo, Volvo C30, Honda Civic...etc...

Guess its her choice ultimately...

Hi Yuben
My biggest advice is do not agree to this.
You want to be responsible for any of the upcoming car issues?
My dad gets blamed for any of his brothers car troubles and gets called to help even on Christmas day, just because he helped in the past.

Or get a brand new corolla with no gadgets....to save your wallet from future responsibilities

27 views and not one person can even offer.an opinion :thumbdo:

Somehow it seems to be a norm on the forum, some threads which are of somewhat less value get plenty of replies and the actual good ones get very few. Not sure whether nobody has an opinion, or like me they are afraid that it might an incorrect one or not 'politically correct'

back on topic, firstly are you limiting options to just BMW?
Secondly, the concern i have is that a well maintained tazz should be returning trouble free motoring unless its had a hard life. The maintenance on a tazz is way lower compared to most BMW and thats assuming the car was maintained regularly and not just fix when something breaks.

Is your cousin aware of the difference in maintaining a Beemer compared a tazz or whether it be price, time frame or just preventative maintenance.

Some owners, especially when coming from a troublesome car are expecting a simple start and drive type of vehicle and we all know that BMW's can be an absolute joy to drive provided that maintenance is done and more especially preventative maintenance.

If you recommended a R130k vehicle and thereafter suggested R10-15k of preventative maintenance would she be up for it?

Ive had 2 E87 1 series

1) 2005 118i - purchased at 150,000km and sold over 3 years later at 210000km
except for a radiator change at +/- 205000km , no issues except general servicing/maintenance etc

2) 2009 120i Msport - Purchased at 104000km , changed control arms at 108000km due to hitting a pothole, the lower left bush had play so had to change all 4arms, currently on 119000km, and no other issues.

in my opinion, because it has such a good chasis and road holding it feels a little down on power, but its solved with the 130i
all round excellent value for money that's why I bought 2:=):

hope this helps

As much as I love BMW, I would recommend she look at a one or two year old Kia\Hyundai\Renault with maintenance plan especially if you are emphasizing "hassle free motoring".

Agree with the above.... Depending on how long she plans on keeping the car. If she is just going to recycle in a few years then definitely the entry brands are real value for money....

A 1 series would be the only car in the BMW range that fits the budget and size requirements.

120d would be obvious choice, but personally I would rather look at a newish VW Polo Vivo, Hyundai I10.

If E46 then what about a ti?

Agree with the consensus tho, Hyundai i20/Kia Rio decent entry level cars and are good value for money.

If it must be a BMW, go for a 118i. There are plenty to choose from within the budget. Here is one:

Low kilos but the MP died of old age, I guess. Finding one with MP for 140k is going to be difficult.

Otherwise, get a Hyundai, Honda, Kia or Toyota.

No VWs or Opels, pleeze. An old Benz is bit of a gamble. Freelander is just another word for deadly poison. And stay far, far away from anything by Renault, Peugeot or Citroën! :RedNo:

Sound advice there. A newer non-German car will most probably cost less to run...

Get her a yaris 1.3 4door second hand and tell her to save the rest of the money. I have one with over 80,000 on it from brand new. Only changed tyres after 60kkm and thats it. This car is rock solid the fuel mileage is brilliant and parts are not that expensive compared to a 1 series bmw and best of all is resale on these are great.

120d makes sense most power and economy. But not too sure that you should be held responsible, used cars need love be it cosmetic or mechanical regardless.. Good luck with the decision :coolShake:

I also think she should go far a Low mileage vehicle with a service plan and warranty. If she is driving a Tazz it must be a good 10years old.

I would stay away from the French Cars, these Korean cars seem okay, but not my 1st choice. You might be lucky to find a clean trouble free 1 series, but I would hate see what it would cost if something goes wrong.

I'm thinking a Toyota Auris would be a great car for her as she is familiar with toyota and you can get a 3 year old car with about 60000km in that price range, the 1 series in that price range are mostly double the age and double the mileage.

The other question is it R140000 cash deal all in, or is it a deposit of R140000, can she afford an installment, then she can get a decent brand new car.

+1 on the Toyota. If she's not going to have money to maintain the car don't go for a car that's potentially expensive to maintain.
