Bmw Anti Freeze

How many liters should I buy for my 328i :banghead:

Long story short, I opened the water bottle to find it empty :dunno: topped it up water & let it run till temp was halfway, it didn't go further then that but I did see water dripping in front. Anyway I'm getting my alternator reconditioned this coming Friday, might as well sort out the leak & do a coolant flush....

Now I know its a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze & distilled water, but how many liters does the entire cooling system use ? is it 2 or 4

Correcto my good man.

Phone mercedes (gha poo!) as well. They use the same coolant as bmw and most of the time they are also a few bucks per bottle cheaper.

BMW coolant is between R50 and R60 per litre, depending on the dealership.

Indy Oil also makes a nice one that I am using in the 540. It is also about R50,00 odd per bottle.

But I will be switching to the BMW stuff soon. The Indy Oil stuff is not so easy to find.

Coolant choice is almost as controversial as oil.
The internet tells me BMW coolant is best. the internet never lies

Apparently BMW coolant has special chemicals in it to preserve the fragile plastic parts in the cooling system of the car..eg radiator, pipes, and so on.

also prevents scaling on the block or something like that.
Plenty of threads on bimmerforums about it.

Thanks guys, so thats 5 liters of Bmw Anti Freeze I need to buy

Does it not come premixed. The Toyota one comes premixed, guess that's the best way to ensure a proper 50/50 mix.

Else you get people buying 1L of antifreeze and toping up with 6L of water. :fencelook:

I'll check tomorrow but I'm sure its concentrated. I was browsing through the service/maintenance records, at exactly a 100,000km ago which was in 2006 the car was at Bmw for a new radiator & coolant flush. Invoice states 2 units of Bmw coolant was used

It's really nice discussion about Bmw Anti freeze, and also really nice above comments, guys, i also want to say something about it.. Anti-freeze is anti-freeze. Look in your handbook for the oil. Hundreds, if not thousands of shops garages sell the stuff...

may as well say oil is oil and cars are cars... they all have 4 wheels...

I have seen 1st hand the corrosion caused by using the wrong antifreeze/dilution...

in the grand scheme of things coolant price is a non issue... we talking saving a few hundred at best every few years...

considering it does not need changing often it seems rather silly to risk corroding the cooling system and engine block when those items are quite pricey to replace...
