BMW 327iS

Chatted to Ulli last night. He is the person asking for the info. In the late 80's he mentioned that BMW Motorsport South Africa created some prototype 327iS which was a 4 door version, with only a handful ever produced. Anybody know of this? Would be a prototype of sorts car......at some stage they were at Kyalami.............

My parents unknown to them bought one those prototypes from a dude in Bruma. Car came with 16inch Racing Dynamic wheels and full Mtech body kit. To date I have never found any information on the origin of the car. When I got my iS in 1991 (89,000+GST) we only realised the four door was a 2.7 when the performance was equally matched.
Apparently the car was seen in Kempton a few years ago with a auto box.

not to sure if alpina did a turbo version in germany
here in my town is a 325 4 door with the alpine turbo conversion car did a total of 40km in the last 2 years its a beut

well born2boost has one, and my friend has one as well.

I also have the Alpine turbo manifold with the BMW badging on it, a very rare item indeed since I think around 50 of these cars were made- they came out with 200kw.

The 327is does exist, there is one in my home town Shallcross in Durban. Owned by the owners of Jamaica Motorsport. They have one in Silver, not stock standard though, its fitted with a roll cage with a hectic turbo conversion. I don't now if they still have it, it was a years ago.

The story i heard about how the 327is came about was from Stannic Group Racing. The 325is was dominating the track, until Opel brought out the Super Boss (TIN CAN with an ENGINE), BMW's reply to that was the 327is. To use the 327is on the track, BMW had to put the car into production.

The superboss is actually a very significant car in the history of cars since it was the first FWD car fitted with LSD, not just a tincan as you refer to it.

No Offense to the Opel fans, but they would even tell you that the one car you would not want to crash in, is a super boss, its not made with safety in mind. I had a friend that died in one.

I have a pic of it from the side. Will try find it in the family albums next time I am in Greece. The badging in the back was 325i, it was fitted with the 145kw motor with same diff. The body panels where steel. ASFAIK it was a test mule of some sort. At that stage I was more interested in chasing girls so did not really realize that it was special in any way.

Compare the two in designs, what car would you rather be in to give you a chance at survival???

The Super boss is a very little weight car, hence its power to weight ratio gave it the performance it had on the track.

You seriously need stop being so serious. I took no "high road". You posted a single line mentioning the IS Turbo which rang a bell with me, but after hearing so many different stories about the IS it's become natural for me to be skeptic. I never said you were wrong or insinuated that you were. Clearly it exists... I never claimed it didn't. I merely stated that I was skeptic... or maybe a better word would 'unsure'. I genuinely forgot about the CAR articles. They were posted in 2007. And I seriously couldn't find anything with Google. I asked more than once for anyone with info to please post it.

You didn't post anything to validate any of your statements. Mentioning a review doesn't mean anything. You don't even seem sure it was in Top Car. The fact that no-one else questioned you is merely because they either didn't know or were unsure themselves. I was unsure and that's why I questioned it.

I also want to be sure that the right info is posted. This is the internet and the internet is full of false information posted by people that make stuff up or people that believe something to be true when it's not. If nobody questioned what others put on the net... well... you could only imagine.




Now I have one more question. From the article above, it seems that the Alpine Turbo conversion is something that you as the owner of the car could have had done. It doesn't say that BMW brought them out the factory or sold them like that... or did they? If they didn't, then how can it be factory fitted? :thinking:
If someone has a proper explanation, then please post before I get accused for taking some "high road" again.

By the way, some countries banned the SuperBoss and the Ts from their roads due to the power weight ratio, Germanny being one of them

This is a moot point since there are no safety ratings attached to the cars so there is no way to objectively and independantly measure the safety of the two cars, you are only basing your view on your opinion and experience.
