Good day all,

Please my BMW 320i E90 started overheating 2days ago and I took it to SMG and I just got a call from them saying it will cost 8300 to change the Radiator before they can check if I need to replace any other thing in the car.. Please is this a fair price and what else should i be looking forward to changing in the car?

Thank you all for your repsonse and support.

P.S the car is still with them and I am in Milnerton, Cape town

Whats the milege on the car?

The E90's are known for their electric water pump giving way at around 90 000 km or higher.

Does your raditor have a leak?

The mileage for the car is 111k and im really not sure if it has a leakage but vapor was coming out from the right side of the radiator yesterday

Not sure what the radiator for a E90 costs but for the E36 318iS i had it was just under R1000 brand new from Silverton (Behr original equipment part). Your's could have the oil cooler for the transmission incorporated in the radiator but R8k sounds a bit rough. Would get a quote from Silverton or some one else before i get the agents to replace it. I know that the local Silverton agent in our town (Hermanus) does the fitting as well, so i assume it is standard practice around the country. Try them, can only cost you a phone call. If the problem is the radiator, that is.

I would have thought that the radiator would be the last component to go, usual on BMW is the expansion tank many times co-located down the side of the radiator.

is the water leaking from the metal portion of the radiator or from the plastic expansion tank ?

There's a gentleman on the forum who advertised radiators yesterday....

For an E90 8k is over the top.....

You should be able to get a brand new one for R2500....expansion tank R700

Joes Radiator is your man: thumbs:

Radiator popping is usually caused by the overheating. 10 to 1 it is the electric water pump caused the.overheating as akash said.

On my ex 320i the pipes perished where they connect to the radiator. The knuckle they fit onto is made of plastic and gets brittle. This was at about 110 000km..

It started off being one pipe, then two. The more Auric stripped the cooling system the more stuff broke. Price went from R2500 to all the way over R12k for radiator, expansion tank, pipes etc..

Zeemax did the whole job for under R6k including towing car from Auric.

Thank you all for your suggestion and help.

I am thinking of towing the car from BMW in Century city to a good garage that can help fix with a better price.

Please is Zeemax a good place to go?

I didn't see any leak.. the only thing i noticed when i drove to the SMG was the vapor coming out from the right side of the radiator and the car is still at SMG i told them not to change the radiator yet because the guy that called me said the R8000+ is just for t he radiator and the overheating might have done other damages

I towed the car from SMG Century city to silverton in mortague gardens and they charge R2812.38 for a new radiator and labour. So I'm going to pick it up tomorrow and I just hope that's the only problem.

Thank you all

Ah, I stand corrected. I think I was looking at a e90 325i that had the electric waterpump then.
