Blow Out

So yesterday on my way back to CT from Paarl, with my boss in the car, I had a blow out on my left front, pretty much a brand new Pilot Sport tyre :thumbdo:
Sat on the side of the freeway for 4 hours waiting for Europ Assist to send a flat bed to take me back to Paarl. When I got to Paarlberg BMW (who were brilliant by the way), took the wheel off but couldn't see any holes, tears or anything in the tyre. The tech had a closer look, and low and behold, in the tiny gap between the tyre and the rim, there was a 5cm vertical tear.I couldn't believe it. So now, R4600 later (still have to go back to Paarl this morning) I have to replace a pretty much brand new tyre.
What amazed me,when the tyre went, the car just gave a little shimmy to let me know something was wrong (this happened at speed about 30km/h over the limit :fencelook:) and I cruised to the side of the road without drama. I couldn't believe how well the car handled the issue.
So just wanted to find out,has anyone else had something similar happen on a Michelin tyre before? Just glad it didn't happen along a mountain pass or something!

Chef, it was on the car when I got it,so I don't think I'll be able to claim, which is a pity! It looks almost as if the tyre was cut or stabbed with a knife. Ag well, this is my year of whatever!:roflol: I'll try get a pic of it later and post it.
I will say one thing though, Paarlberg BMW were brilliant!

Does your wife love you, dude? :fencelook:

:biglol::biglol:

I hope she does! It is just such a weird place for that to have happened! You'd have to be a ninja to stab it there!:roflol:

Sorry to hear that bud!

My concern is that I noticed that when you were here, that the tyres were Michelin Pilot Sport 2's which were discontinued in 2011/2012 and replaced with the SuperSports.

Glad you are ok mate and that you and Beast are in one piece!

Firstly glad that nothing bad happened! But not nice to lose a perfectly good tyre like this! Was this a normal tyre or RFT just out of interest?

Unless there is visible damage on the tyre caused by impact, its a factory fault, and you need to take this up with them....

That is kak. Sorry. Glad it wasn't more serious. And +1 on getting Michelin to have a look at it. It could quite possibly be a faulty tyre. If so, they will certainly replace it. Worth a shot.

If the tyre cut was found between the rim and tyre, the only thing i can think of that would have made the cut would be the machine they use to put the tyre onto the rim. Over time the cut would have got worse and then Blowout

Damn Bugger...that's scary...If you want, I can check with one of the tyre reps and see if they can organise a claim with Michelin...

Thanks guys. I think I may have collected something on the road that may have caused the damage. I went back to Paarl this morning and got the new tyre from BMW, they sorted the fitment and balancing out,so everything is ok now. Didn't even think to ask about the old tyre.
I'm just glad there wasn't any collateral damage to myself, my passenger or anyone around me,so it could've turned out a lot worse,so very glad nothing drastic happened.
Thanks for the concern and the suggestions guys! I've got the invoice now from BMW so if there is any issue with the new tyre and the others going forward, I will definitely take it up with Michelin.
Ant,I remember you saying something about the discontinued tyres, the one I bought today looks similar, but suspect it may be a 3? Not sure how to tell. And just as a matter of interest, BMW seemed cheaper on tyres than TWT and SupaQuick, which was surprising.

Sorry Philip, was a normal tyre. M cars don't come with RFTs. No space anywhere on the car to put one,so they come with these M Mobility kits that you are supposed to be able to inflate the tyre with. But those kits are the first things that go on the car,as in get removed...:roflol:

If it is older than 5 years from the cast in date of manufacture, then don't even bother.

If younger than 5y, you MIGHT have a shot if it was a manufacturing defect.

Don't we just love BMW for taking away the spare.

I mean it is obviously a lot more convenient to sit next to the road for 4 hrs and to be towed away rather than to change the wheel and be on your way 15 minutes later

If the tyre was older than 5 years,it was in damn good nick! I don't think it was though, suspect it was put on in the last year or so. When I bought the car it went through BMW quality check, so my assumption would be they checked that as well, hence me wondering if I drove over something that may potentially have caused that.
And I couldn't agree with you more on the taking away the spare notion.Make space dammit!! :roflol:

Good to hear nobody got hurt. The part in bold I don't understand.
