Hi fellas,

Are we all paying upwards of four grand for PZero runflats?????This price is just laughable...and yet what can one do....Potenzas aren't much better price wise :(

Has anyone swapped for non-RTFs and if so what what make/series? And what of the spare as the E90 doesn't have a provision in the boot?

To think I believed that Conti SC3s were pricey at R2.1k per.............

I changed to non-rfts, my front tyres are still potenzas RFTs (absolute shit).

I put Contis SC3s on the back 255 / 40 / 17 , I think they are great tyres. Paid R2500 each fitted balanced and aligned.

As for a spare. I bought a space saver off junkmail. For I think R2100.

245/50/18 P7 purchased direct from Pirelli warehouse in November (trade price) before mark-up R4018. for a customer...would normally sell on to the general public for around R5050, for FANATICS would drop the %-mark-up to about R4700-R4750

Interesting, have you had any issues mixing RFTs with non-RFTs? That 4 grand can get me 2 SC3s (or equivalent) for the front, would rather do that and then get the spare kit as soon as my pockets will allow.

Nope none, you'd probably only have problems mixing them left and right.

The potenzas like all RFTs are shit in my opinion, when taking corners at speed with little bumps the tyres slip. I've even been considering going and buying 2 SC3s second hand and putting them on the front and selling the RFTs to some one who wants them.

The only way I'd have RFTs on a car if the car was for my gf/wife/mother. Other than that we're men, we can change tyres  .

Your ride quality will also improve with normal tyres.

Also the other thing to consider is if you do a lot of long trips in the car with a full car and have a flat you have to put the normal sized wheel in the boot. So in some situations its better to have the RFTs.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciated being able to drive 60kms at 50kph on a flat tyre to get home last night, but I'm asking myself if it's worth 4-5k a pop? Plus the said tyres are only available on order as many places don't have it in stock, so now you're car less for a few days.....but if your wife/girlfriend/daughter etc is driving then it's worth avoiding the potential hazards.

Maybe will replace both fronts with non-RFTs and do the rears + spare kit in the next months, will decide tomorrow....this was supposed to be damper money :(

To be honest i personally don't think it's worth that much more.
Premium to be a bit higher is ok but not what they ask for them.

I have tested RFT properly by being stupid and getting upset. Picked up a puncture, reset the indicator and drove 40km at 180km/h - yes it was a long time ago and yes it was at 5 in the morning. The beauty of it was i had the tyre plugged after that and still did 15k km on it before i had to replace so yes the safety part is there for sure. but the price.... not that much i think.

If you think at it from another angle... what is your life worth if you get a puncture in a area where you know you will either get jacked or jacked and shot ??

my 2c....

as we discussed I would just fit non RTF you need to do the change some time...

if this makes the car tail happy for a bit least it will be fun while you finish the rear tires

you push your cars harder in the bends than most so you will pick up the difference if its there... I have had customers who fitted one pair of non RTF only to soon after have the replace the other as they were not happy with the balance of the car

Hankook Ventus V12 I reckon was a really good tyre..

The first 100km sucked but that for me was always with new tyres..

Once you get use to less movement in the tyre with the RFT's it takes some getting use to going back to non RFT..

and a decent non RFT in 255/35/18 aint the cheapest either...

You are 100% about the safety aspect!! I'd also been doing a bit more than the speed limit ( :) ) before the indicator came on and could not feel any difference, no bumpiness or instability. Pity it couldn't be saved :(

You can't put a price on your health/life :( , but damn this has caught me at a bad time. So it's either replace with the same or get two hi spec non-RFTs for the same money....

I know bud...

Things like this always happens at the wrong time.
Maybe see if you can get a set that's been used for a bit less use them for a while till you can get a new set of whatever you prefer. :)

There should be a few sets that you can get off gumtree or possibly a member. :)

Bluff Tyres (KZN) quoted me the following for Pirelli P Zero:

225 / 45 / 17 - R1500 each

255 / 40 / 17 - R2500 each

I enjoy the RFT's, but would not be replacing them. For R8k you can get a set of 19's with excellent tyres (on this forum)...

Mmmm.....

I am going to be the odd one out here. I would actually like to see as many as possible people buy run flat tyres .

BMW surely put a lot of thought into this issue. It is one of the reasons the boot space is so big. No spare tyre to take up space. As far as the performance of the tyres is concerned, I think they are well suited to the car. My 320d is a luxury family sedan, not an F1 racing car. I have on occasion put the car through it's paces a bit, and I find the road-holding more than satisfactory. The ride of my E90 is a bit hard, but I can live with that. My first set lasted 48 000 km's. Stock standard Bridge Stone Potenzas.

I bought the car with 17 000 km on the clock, and will be replacing it early next year just before it runs out of MP. This means I will have had to replace tyres once during the time I had it.

Look at it this way:

If you buy a new 320d now, you will fork out roughly R430 000, depending what extras you have. Most people like me, will drive the car for about four years. I those four years you will replace tyres twice, at about R11 000 a pop. So tyres are going to cost you around R22 000 over four years. around 5% of the cost of the car. And you have the luxury of extra boot space, and not having to worry about ever fixing a puncture on the road.

Ok, so let's compare to replacing the tyres with non run flats. You will not be saving R22 000. You will save the difference, namely around half, say R11 000 at most. This over a period of 4 years, while then having to carry a spare, a fix any puncture you have on the road....

So....I guess if you are hell bent playing race-track-driver on public roads, there MAY be an argument for some special high performance tyre...but then...that is not really going to save you a bundle either.

But here is the thing.....one of the reasons run-flat are so expensive, is that not enough people are buying them yet. The cost of production goes up the lower the quantity.Stock holding also plays a role. So if more people buy them, they will eventually become cheaper.

Meh...I guess it is a "personal" thing, but I am fine with the concept of the run-flats. yes, they cost more, but in the big picture compared to the price of the car, considering the advantages, I don't think it is a big deal.
