Black exhaust soot

Hi all,

Got a new 118i LCI with around 3000kms done. Have driven long distance as well as in town. My question is whether it's normal to have an exhaust that's blackened by soot? And do I need to be worried?!

Thanks

Brilliant. Thanks Max. I was always told that a car should have a clean exhaust.

Who told you that?

Just clean it everytime you wash your car...will prevent it from staining too much

That black soot is probably excess fuel being burnt?

Do you drive the car fairly hard? I'm also assuming it's stock standard being so new?

Cars tend to run rich when cold, making the black soot. Then condensation in the exhaust cause it to run out like that.

Yep, car is only 2 months old. I thought it might be running rich. I don't drive it hard, nothing over 4000 revs.

Perfectly normal. Keep it clean, or it will stain/eat your exhaust :)

Meguiars NXT Metal Polish works for me. If you don't use a polish periodically it will be clean but will still be a bit stained. Try to avoid it starting to pit the surface.

A car must have a clean exhaust!! The soot must not ruin the tips! :skit:

Mine is bad but at least I am OCD enough to clean them a lot! :roflol:

Agreed with the other guys.

Also the change in fuel quality and formulation has a role to play,as cars no longer burnt white/grey...that would have kept the tips clean, but the ideal world is no longer in SA.
