Hi,

So, opinions on using this as a mixed ratio with pump diesel? And clean Bio Diesel?
Anyone tried it?

I bought some biodiesel the other day for my spray booth.

There was so much crap in it that it clogged the jets.

Luckily it was a cheap repair as I just had to clean it, but imagine that was a set of injectors at like 4k each.

My friends family has been using biodiesel since before I met him in school 9 years ago in grade 8. They still have the same car as well golf 4 tdi. I guess it just depends on who's making it. Rolf mentioned something about him doing tests in germany with it? Or something along those lines.

has to be very very clean to run in a modern turbo diesel.. older diesels run homebrew biodiesel no problems.. but dont even think of running it in a 2004 and up beemer turbodiesel (homebrew i mean)

I have heard some horror stories and some good feedback. At the end of the day it boils down to the process behind it. If well made it can even be cleaner than normal diesel. If made quickly and hastily then you end up with crap.

I know a guy that has been making bio disel for years. he built a little "factory" in his garage. He has also been using it in both his diesel cars for years no problem. He showed me that if it has too much colour to it then it has not been filtered enough. His diesel is as clear as water.

I'm no chemical engineer but i would not take a risk on old cooking oil mixed with paraffin or paint stripper or what ever else some guy in his garage is testing on a 50 year old Lister water pump engine.

Nor would I charles, but there are people making it properly. I did a project some years ago, on BioDiesel for a science expo. And like i said my friends family had already been using it for some years. I was lucky enough to go to the guys facility, and while not huge it was no small-time garage operation with him running tests on a 50 year old car. This was around 6 years ago. I'm sure more developments have been made.

Some strong opinions...

So if you could find good, clean biodiesel you would try it...

I`m keen on trying a 40Bio 60Pump mix soon....have found some manufacturers that seem to produce good quality biodiesel...will investigate fully first though.

An interesting point I heard recently that biofuels may be relatively carbon free but there is other dangerous gas emission due the combustion temps an pressures.

Running an AUDI A4 2.0T on BioDiesel with adjusted software (Sporty / Econo Mix) and de-DPF

The car doing well and has currently 230000km on the clock :joy:

Sorry but this is Red Bull.....
We are making 400 liters of "homebrew" BioDiesel a week and run moden engines on it at 100% go rate without any failures!

Will post some pics when back in Cape Town :thumbs:

What does the cost of homebrewed diesel work out to, hypothetically, if you were to sell it?

As we are getting the used cooking oil free of charge, the only cost involved is the chemicals i.e. caustic soda and methanol

We esterify FAME = Fatty Acid Methyl Ester which is the safest and fastest and most cost effective BioDiesel.

All in all a liter FAME costs us about R2,60 with the higher exchange rate we have now. Some time ago we could make it for R1,80 per liter :joy:

Consumption is roughly the same after adjustment of the software. :idea:

After some research I have the following:

1. Make sure its a good quality Biodiesel
2. Get a spare Dieselfilter /pump so long
3. Decent quality Biodiesel has more lubrication than pump diesel

I am going to start with an 80/20 mix, then 60/40 and so on... Goal would be to run a 20/80 mix or B100. I will also compare performance figures..and consumption.
