Bike advice needed

Okay seeing as this is a BMW forum I apologize ahead of time. But it is also the most active forum I am part of and seeing as we have a few bike enthusiasts on here I am going to try.

As most know I ride a 2005 Hyosung GT 650 R, and yes not the best or most powerful bike but I love it and it goes when I need it.

Now for the problem.

After my first little accident in May the bike started to sputter around 5000 rpm, so result was either stick with it till round 7000 where it will stop or never go over 100k/h.

Took the bike to the local shop and guy tunes me the carbs are done for as the air fuel mixture screws can't be adjusted.

Got the bike back and was a lot better for about a week. Then I found out the fuel tap diaphragm is shit and when the bike is off it drips fuel into the oil. Got a new one(or rather a similar one from another bike manufacturer) and replaced all the oil and fitted a manual fuel tap on the line.

And before we could really see if it will go away we had another small accident with the bike where a guy just stopped in front of my brother in law and then chased of.

Well took a month or 2 to get all the needed parts that broke and bent replaced and fixed but bike just cranked and didn't start.

So many hours tinkering and cleaning bike started, rode to work once no hassles on the way back the sputtering started again next day bike didn't start. Again.

With again a lot of fiddling and cleaning got the bike running. Not perfect yet but running. Started 2 days in a row. Although the second day she did take a few tries and heavy adjustment of the idling screw.

Took a day cleaned her up put all fairings and such back on. When trying to start her the night to move her into her parking space bike idled at 3000rpm and no matter how I turned that didn't want to go down.

Thinking okay maybe the choke got stuck I'll fix it in the morning. Next day we used the battery for another bike as mine was charged and working. Got battery back and no luck bike just cranks don't swing.

Last week with everything of and wiring harness checked I tried again this time with spraying quickstart into the carbs, bike sounded like it wanted to start so fitted airbox and fuel tank back, pressed the button one backfire and back again to just cranking. No I must also mention over the few months I have the bike it would randomly give loud backfires on startup and when letting go of throttle it would rumble with little backfires as its slowing down.

So far I tested the stator, regulator/rectifier, all relays, swapped out the 2 fuses, checked the 2 coils as well as swapped out the coils, plugs and plug points, and even though the bike sparks I still suspect the cdi but have no real definite way to test it.

Bike gets fuel and sparks but no luck in starting tried push starting it it sounds like it wants to start but as soon as you apply throttle it dies.

Anybody know where I can start to test or what could be the cause of this?

Any info or advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanx.

Sorry dude... Sounds very isolated to this bike and not a generic issue I have come across. I know a guy called Kurt in the Randburg area behind Hamptons cars.

He is generally very good.

Other then that I know Wayne Heaseman as the suzuki specialist.

Good luck.

wow dude, you have issues there, with all the rebuilding going on I am led to believe that you have rewired something incorrectly and its burnt something out.
I would go back to retracing her wiring and systematically finding the faults.
I would also clean out the entire fuel system and put in a new fuel filter even if it dont have one.

Problem is I can't get bike anywhere don't have a trailor or a car with a towards.

Did that already and for it being something that burnt or blown I'm not to sure as I didn't really rewire anything accept replace a bad ground cable.

I have read somewhere that the side stand relay and switch gives hassles and then a sensor under the front sprocket but not to sure how to test them.

But what baffles me is that the bike ran very close to perfect the last time it started then the idling issue that dropped and then high revs and then just nothing.

Also heard that people say the timing chain can skip a tooth with the backfire but that doesn't explain why it started and then just didn't start again.

the side stand switch can be bypassed as it stops you switching on while the stand is down.

But even with the stand up the bike doesn't start now I don't know if the relay could have gone and stays in the stand down position?

Try bypass it then.

Hi Bruce,

What you are explaining reminds me of issue sI have had over time.

Has the bike got spark? If it has...all it needs is fuel.

Fuel is where your issue lies.

Remove the carbs, all of em, clean the jets out....leave the air screw - only take your main jet and pilot jet out. Inspect them closely. and clean out with a thin copper wire, make sure not to stick anything abrasive in the jets.

I can almost promise you that something is stuck in the jets...I had this issue on my XL500, motor was sweet, took it out often, then one day it started giving issues on start up, and anyone that knows, kicking a single cylinder out in the bush doesnt get fun after 15times.

Took my carb off, and found some debris blocking the pilot jet(the one that supplies fuel for idle and run purposes(low rpm)....dislodged the debris, gave all components a carb clean. refitted the carb, and first kick it fired up.

Hey Jason

Was told that and cleaned it out like 3 times. Whats weird is that it started and ran almost perfect then just nothing. So not to sure anymore.

But Thanx for the advice will give it a clean this weekend and maybe check the choke as well as some clips holding it in place is broken.

Hi, don't know if this will help but I have a friend with a Honda 150 Civic (car). Has 200k kms on the odo. He put fuel in and drove about 500 meters. Car stopped and will start but immediately die again. We first thought that he had put diesel in a petrol car but that was not the problem. Turned out to be the cam belt that had stripped two teeth and threw the cam timing out. Funny, it would start immediately but then immediately just die. Could be that your timing chain jumped a tooth or two with all the backfiring. Check cam timing! Replaced the cambelt on the Honda and it is now purring like a kitten.

Hi so just an update on this.

Had a friend of mine help me a local bike club president, and proper mechanic, turns out it was something very small, stupid and something not even the local bike shop specialists thought to have a look at.

Problem with it not starting was oil pressure. And after we refilled the oil up we picked up both spark plugs was shot, swapped them out again and bike started just fine.

Still have a little sputter when picking up speed fast in 3rd or higher but probably some dirt somewhere in the system.
