whats are the symptoms for big ends wich are on there way out?

i have replace timing chain tensioner , lifters , and yesterday i replaced oil and filter with Castrol SLX 5w30 but the rate still exists and i think is getting worse it sounds like lifters or rockers but they are good. the rattle is through out the rev range and gets very lound , actually sounds like a older diesel.

iam out of ideas can any one shed some light a mate suggested that it could be big ends , but iam not experianced in that department so i have no clue.

any suggestions would be great
thanks
Don

Give us a recording, hard to diagnose from a description.

Big ends are going to sound like a guy with a hammer in the engine on acelleration, you cant miss it.

Main bearings give a loud rumbling sound, especially on the overrun.

Tapets give a rattly tapping sound getting less with revs, could also be cam bearings.

A loose cam chain just causes a fat racket clattery sound, especially first two seconds after startup.

Piston slap is a muted knocking on acelleration.

Carbon contamination sounds like a rattle.

Would have to hear the noise, but you can usually HEAR when its big ends.

You can try the old stick to the ear or stethoscope to hear where from the motor it is coming from, just watch that fan though, tis not so kind to body parts.

ok so i had the car looked at the big ends and mains and oil pump are finished and the crank will have to be machined or replaced depending on the damage , i got quoted 7K , is this an acceptable price or should i just replace the motor?

when my car was serviced last decemeber they replaced the oil with Castrol magantec not sure what viscosity of the oil was but , when i drained it it was pitch black and very thick , could this be the source of all the problems?

okay got my car back this afternoon , man what a differance , new big ends mains oil pump and timing chain. This was caused due to incorrect oil that was put in the car when it was serviced last. All is new and great she drives like a dream.

Andrew will make a plan just goning to let the new bearings settle then its all good . What would be a good run in time ?

Hey Donovan, glad you got your ride sorted. I am getting 2004 318I auto, should have it in a week or 2. Thanks for the heads up on the oil. Reuben ( ex Panasonic)

Since have gotten my car back there has been a vibration between 2000-3000 rpm feels like the gearbox , clutch was also replaced , i returned the car and they confirmed its the box but they cant pin point it , they have sent the pressure plate and flywheel in to be checked , but surely they can just warp ? any ideas

Don, I think it is most likely going to be the flywheel. There is not enough rotating mass inside the gearbox to create any serious vibration.

If the vibration is present only when in gear then I would look at the drive shaft. Check the forum on common problems with the E46. I remember reading about it there. regards.
