Howsit peeps,

My beemer is due for a new set of runflat tyres....its an e90 LCI with 18" m-sport wheels...

I wanna know what is a good make tyre that will give excellent mileage coz so far the car is still on its 1st set of tyres and the mileage is +- 40000kms (Michelin). Apparently most runflats only get around 30k-35k kms... Is this true?

What are your thoughts and experiences?

Thanks

Michelin is very good

Bridgestone Potenza is another good tyre

My wife had bridgestones, didn't last very love. Replaced for pirellis. Had a tyre seperation in less than 400km. More confidence in bridgestones.

we don't do a lot of trade in RFT's, our "bread-n-butter" is the average "Joe"

but

from what I have experienced, the harder the compound, the beter the life-span and the worse the traction.
For the average daily drive I doubt most people would even notice a different in traction between the 3 or 4 main manufacturers, and thus life-span is an overriding option.
The more spirited driver, would probably feel the subtle differences in traction though.
As I have it....open to discussion/criticism

Hardest compound to softest compound, (ie. least traction to best traction)
1)Continental
2)Bridgestone
3)Pirelli
4)Michellin

open for discussion

Thnx guys for the speedy replies:praise:

@lambchop: i still have some tread left as well but i noticed the back tyres are getting eaten in the middle section.. and the car is doing a lil over 40k kms... I think the type of roads we drive on and driving style would make a huge difference in terms of who gets the best mileage out of any tyre...

@ralf: I cant really criticise or comment on that coz its the 1st tym i own a car with runflats, but would u then say the price range would be in the same order starting from cheapest to most expensive? I got a quote about a month ago for the rear tyres 255/35/18 @ R3750 each.

I used to get 40 - 45k on most of the 18 run flats. What i found, the bridgestones looked the best on the rim. The michelins gave me the longest life, about 5k. The pirelli was the noisyest. But best wet grip there was.

Michelin had awesome grip on my e90 lci, front set lasted 36k km and rears lasted 45k km, weird I know since rwd but I changed the rears after they were almost bald.
Michelin is the softest, gives a better ride compared to the harder Bridgestone IMO, drove my cousin's car for comparison.
Also in durbs we have a supplier getting Michelin sets at about 2-3k cheaper than most other tyre shops

Where do Goodyear RFT's feature in this list?? I have Goodyears in front and Bridgestones at the back. Had all bridgestone's on my 1er and was very happy with them. Got them 2nd hand with the rims but were pretty fresh, and did a further 40000kms on them.

Get rid of the RFTs they are terrible.

I just put 2 new 255/40/17 Continental SC3s on my car. They are great tyres I paid R2500 each fitted aligned and balanced with nitrogen all round (Not that I'd pay for nitrogen I just get them to throw it in for free). Their original quote for every thing was about R3200 a tyre. Then i got them down to R2500.

I find they are great tyres. I previously had bridgestone ?RE050A? RFTs and they were not great tyres. I dont know what all the hype is about these brigestones, perhaps its because they are quite cheep for a runflat? But I did not have a good experience and I have not read good reviews of them online. The contis are a far better tyre, quieter and better grip especially in the wet!

I cant wait to get rip of these RFTs on the front of my car. Which are also bridgestones. And make the front of the car ride very hard, especially when hitting speed bumps or any bump in the road.

If its your wife/gf/daughters car thats a different story, then RFTs are great for the safety aspect.

And at the moment I just drive around with a compressor and one of those tyre repair aerosol cans. Until I can find a reasonably priced space saver.

I use Michelin Pilot Sport 3 non-runflat on my car. They ride softer, grip better and i have better fuel consumption. There is a weight saving of 2kg. per wheel so car is 8kg lighter.

...thats a good price, the mark-up is extremely low, and almost non-viable at that price (for us)
Yokohama "no-stock"
Continental "no-stock"
Bridgestone ...price would be exceedingly expensive so didn't even bother
Pirelli direct from warehouse (lowest price we can get them) would be R3950 (incl fit & Bal)

Michelins are the best. I got them on my mothers 325.

I got the Bridgestone on my 335, very unhappy with this tire.

I wanted Michilins but unfortunatly they were impossible to get in the size 255/40/17 . With that width they only had 18s and 19s.

Contis SC3s are great though!

I am using 245/40/18 on the back. They still handle, the profile is better for softer ride and the best your ratio is slightly longer.BMW cars that are limited to 253km/h do 257km/h with these.( Michelin PS3)

I'd prefer to go wider  .

At the time I didn't want to go smaller but I'm sure it is hardly noticeable.

You should of gone for 265s !!! But I guess you would have had a lower profile.
