Hi Guys

I need some service parts like oil filter, air filter etc.

Which is the cheapest and most reliable place that offer a cheaper price than that of BMW?

For service parts I find bmw to be the cheapest. I'm due for an oil service and just bought my oil and filter from bmw yesterday. Came to under R650 with discount.

BMW are ridiculous with cabin filters. They want me to pay R1200 for my set of cabin filters :slow:

Lol yes because they designed to filter out the smell of the dead corpses that the E39 mafia transport. On a side note G drive is pretty awesome for parts

Who, BMW or G-Drive?

G-Drive parts are good quality as all are Meyle and Bosch unless otherwise stated.

My parts from BMW without oil come to around R2700 I think, whereas with G-Drive they come to around R1300.

BMW's cabin filters are expensive because they are activated charcoal filters. This means that the carbon is treated with oxygen which opens millions of tiny pours that adsorb odorous gasses and general smelly things.

The filters you buy at GW or some of the other filters are probably just normal paper which mostly just stops leafs from getting into you blower motor.

This is an interesting thread and hopefully I can add to it from my recent experiences since both the E90 and E46 required dealer services within the last 2 months.

In both cases I should have sourced the Cabin Microfilters from G-Drive since they have the Meyle proper Carbon Activated pollen filters, and for fairly reasonable money especially compared to the agents! If I remember correctly, R460 for the E90 and R200 for the E46 versus R800 and R700 from the agents respectively. I ended up buying GUD Cabin Microfilters from Midas which had the best prices for these, but in both cases they were normal pollen filters and not the proper Carbon Activated tyres (the branch that I dealt with is too stupid to know the difference and said they were on the phone when I made enquiries).

OEM oil filters are still cheaper for these two cars (and I presume this should apply for most), and even if there is a slight cost saving going for aftermarket, I am somehow more comfortable with the OEM filters for this.

Spark plugs from the agents are more costly than other suppliers like G-Drive, Midas, Masterparts, Goldwagen etc. For the E90 330i the agents quoted me R230 each some years back, but the equivalent Bosch plugs are less than R100 from G-Drive and similar from other places. Same sort of thing with the E46.

Engine air filters were fairly well priced from the agents a few years ago, but they seem to have become more expensive lately! In this case I once again ended up going for the GUD air filters from Midas which are perfectly fine.

Since I am still running my cars on Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W30 LL01 I source it directly from the Castrol Depo and paid roughly R60 per ltr which is a nice saving!

My advice is to always make a list of all the items needed and to price them from the agents first, then see what the other suppliers have for their good quality aftermarket parts. If the OEM parts are priced close enough, then I'd say go for the OEM parts. If you want to buy everything from under one roof so to speak, then you are not always going to have the greatest cost savings. But then again, it's pointless driving halfway around the countryside to only save a few Rands...

Another thing to mention, G-Drive is based in Sandton and so you are able to pick up any supplies your ordered yourself. If not, they deliver which I think is a major added benefit in today's rushed lifestyle.

I agree that BMW does have parts slightly cheaper, and then you are assured of OEM quality. My fuel filter for my last service was a hell of a lot cheaper from BMW than the Goldwagen one :dunno:

Philip I think they maybe tried to pull a fast one on you with the spark plugs:fencelook: I paid R67 for plugs from bmw. They were Bosch platinum plugs if I remember correctly.

Total cost of parts from bmw for my inspection 2 last year came to R2700. Of that the most expensive parts were the fuel and cabin filters at R970 and R600 odd respectively. My oil came to around R60 per liter.

Don't be scared to ask them for a discount:rollsmile: They normally throw in a 15-20% discount on service parts.

It seems like they only have depos in the Western Cape, this is now Lube Marketing that I am talking about, but I would think that there should be a similar company in other regions. Otherwise, often even Midas seem to stock this oil at similar prices.

Well, it does seem to vary from dealer to dealer, but when I enquired about the price of the OEM spark plugs for my E90 330i (these are the iridium types) they were R230 each from the agents (BMW branded NGK) - the same NGK plugs from Midas were R170 each, G-Drive had the Bosch iridium plugs for R106 each at the time. For the E46 the OEM plugs are a few bucks more each compared to Midas for example. Are you sure about the 15-20 % discount? Usually this only applies to non service parts...
