Hi Guys,

Going to do a service on 2008 E87 118I.
What would be the best grade of oil to use?

Thanks.

Grab a 5 litre of Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100.

It's BMW approved with a top spec and LL Rating.

I've always used Castrol Edge 5W40 in my current car and previously was a strong believer of the Shell brand.

I have since changed to Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 and have had no issues.

Anyone else use Shell oil in their cars?

N46 motor.

I switched to Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 in my 318i last December & will keep on using it :) Also running it in the Fiance's Corsa

My gasket oil leak started leaking less after I switched to Shell So +1 to Shell Vs Whatever the Mechanic was using. And the timing chain & bits are all much cleaner as well.. So another +1 to the Shell

Hi There

The best oil to use on your car will be the Castrol Magnetec. I have compared this and all BMW agents will approve of this.

Take care

That being said most (if not all) BMW dealers are morons.

does it really matter what brand oil you use castrol vs shell?? I`m asking because mine is due for an oil service and I have always used castrol slx, would I be cocking up by going to shell?

It all depends on the Mileage that one does.
i understand that 5w40 Edge is the best oil.
I do may be 12000 km a year and Magnetec is for low mileage.

Thank You

The Shell Helix has awesome Cleaning properties, I changed to it at 148K km's & my car loves it as do I.. I have heard of too many stories of BMW's running Castrol having Sludge issues.. And from my experience with how the shell has Cleaned my Internals (as far as I can see through the filler cap like the timing chain etc) I will stick with the Shell

Also remember there is 2 types of magnatec (as far as I know) the 1 you can get as pnp/checkers/makro etc and the one BMW has changed to..

After changing to Shell Helix 5W40, I get 0.2% better fuel consumption. That equates to 2km per tankful, so using 25 fillups per year, that is a saving of about R 30,00. Not a great deal but better than R 30 more.
