Best fuel consumption so far...

Good day all!

Just wanted to hear from other 320d E90 drivers 06 models what the best consumption was they got.

With my right foot, on my 2010 model I got to 5.1l/100km as well, but I wont do it again, was one boring drive.
I rather burn more fuel.

Best I ever got in my 06 was 7.1lt/100 driving from CT to jhb. Normal town driving would return 11-13. There was definitely something wrong with it.

They told the car it was a 335i, but when it couldn't produce the power, it got sad and over fueled :hammerhead:

My 335i returns the same figures lol.

Hiltonmarx, how do you get the Average consumption on km/l from l/100km?

Thanks

Not sure if serious or not... But press the menu button on your radio and go to the settings.

Best I got was 21.3km/l (4.7l/100km) in my '06 330d from Honeydew to Centurion. 53km and I drove slower than most trucks :hammerhead:

Looking at "best consumption" is worthless between short distances and distances that you dont complete both ways. You are basically just fooling yourself.

1. By testing the OBC against actual figures, Ive found that figures differ from car to car. It also varies depending on circumstance, and other variables. This leaves the OBC reading to be more of a estimate and its not 100% accurate.
2. If you drive from JHB to Durban for example you are going from the highveld to the coast. The only way to determine true figures is if you complete a round trip.

The only way to effectively claim a certain consumption achieved is with actual liters used between fill ups. Now I realize that Im probably talking about 0.5liter per 100km difference between OBC readings and actual readings, BUT if you want to claim figures like 4.4l/ 100kms VS 3.9l/ 100kms that makes a HUGE difference.

In that case I managed 1150km with 60 liters diesel. JHB to Bloem and back with additional KM's on the highway. Thats 19.16km / Liter

Some very impressive fuel readings above, with some based on ‘actual’ calculations. Two questions from the conversations above.

1. Does the MyBMW app, which we now have available in more recent years, calculate the available litres of fuel (which is seen in the home page of the app by the car icon) based on the OBC fuel consumption (that is, max tank capacity minus the OBC consumption x distance traveled), or is it obtained separately, based on a more accurate measure of available fuel? If the latter, then we can use it as a third way of determining the fuel consumption (the first being OBC, and the second being the manual, first principles way based on actual fuel used).

2. The issue I have with the method of filling fuel to determine actual fuel consumption, is how to even do this accurately? The most consistent way I thought of was to fill a tank to ‘first click’, drive for xxx Km, then refill to first click again and then determine the consumption. First click therefore acts as a consistent measurement in terms of fuel used. My concern is whether this first click itself is consistent/absolute? Does it always correspond to a specific, constant fuel volume when activated? Eg 55litres in a 57litre F30? If not, then that will not yield an accurate and consistent fuel consumption measure and so hardly validates claims of ‘actual’ consumption readings.

Good questions.

On point 2, you will get some minor differences I assume if there is air in that tube just before you hear first click? Open to correction on this. You need enough tank to tank readings to average out and the outliers minimise.

I think an engineer may be better placed to answer here.

On point 1, there could be a degree of hysteresis built in. Again, our engineering colleagues can help us better understand.

Given enough measurements using the same method running to almost empty and refilling, will give you the most accurate estimate of consumption, as long as your odometer is accurate.

If my calculations are correct, and depending on the way I drive the best I get is between 6.5 - 6.7 liters per 100km. I usually drive from Milnerton to Stellenbosch. I only once hit 5.5 liters per 100km on this trip
